    Brooks is ill.

    Brooks Robinson hospitalized; releases statement

Orioles Hall of Famer Brooks Robinson, 73, was hospitalized today and released a statement a few moments ago saying he was doing fine.

    Here's the statement:

"Thank you for your outpouring of concern. I was originally scheduled for a routine outpatient procedure at Greater Baltimore Medical Center on Thursday, March 31, 2011. The evening before surgery, I developed a fever and infection. My doctors chose to admit me to aggressively treat the infection and I am responding well to antibiotics.

"I am pleased to say that I continue to remain cancer free after my successful treatment for prostate cancer in 2009. I ask that you give me privacy. I look forward to a full recovery and thank you for your prayers."

    Thoughts and prayers Brooks!

When I first saw the thread, I was a bit apprehensive, Number Five is the first of many O's heroes from my first days of fandom.

The last few years have been quite a health challenge for Five. I truly appreciated that he has put any issues with the organization behind. I hope that we get to enjoy this wonderful human being for years to come.

    From a SUN update:

GBMC said in a separate news release Friday that it had received many phone calls and emails [about Brooks] from concerned people in Baltimore and across the region. The hospital has set up an email account, getwell@gbmc.org, where fans can send thoughts and well-wishes to be forwarded to the Robinson family.

I have not heard otherwise, so I assume that Five is still in the hospital recovering.
