2011 GTP: Nick Markakis
It will be interesting to see where he grades out with the differing opinions around here.

He's an above average player who had a below average season for him. I gave him a "C".

So we're grading his 2011 season, or him as a player overall?

I think the grade for Wieters will be most interesting. Excellent defensive season with a strong offensive push late. He still isn't where expectations were set before 2009, so there could be some variance.

His OPS+ was 109.

Decent production, solid OFer, but not the player we all hoped he'd be. The power continues to be non-existent. All of that being said, he's still a very useful player who can be an important piece going forward. I give him a C for not living up to what we thought he'd become.

I was not clear whether we are grading the season he had compared to his own standards, or compared to other RFs. Either way, I gave him a D. That's a bit harsh compared to the league, and if there had been a C- available, that's what I would have given him in terms of comparison with his peers. He ranked 8th in fWAR, 9th in wOBA, 12th in wRC+ among AL RF's with at least 300 PA. That puts him a little below average in my book.

He gets a C for me.
I know his OPS+ was ok but that only matters so much to me.
There are plenty of players, lesser players than Nick, that have still seen themselves have big years with the offense down.
Now, I get that their are always exceptions but I just don't buy into the OPS+ theory as much as others. If your talent level is 800-850 OPS, which I think Nick's is, then you should be doing that whether offense is up or down.
His defense was solid. I think he is average to slightly above.
I think his desire to play everyday and be in the lineup everyday is very important. He hustles and he cares.
But he has to hit more.
If he isn't going to be a big homer guy, then he needs to be a guy that hits 300-320 and his OBP needs to be better.
He needs to stop worrying about striking out as well...don't expand the zone as much.
Oh and stop putting your hands high and tweaking with your stance as much. Its OBVIOUS what works well for him, batting stance wise, so he needs to stick with that.
And, of course, get stronger.
I agree with Frobby that I definitely see a spike in his BA/OBP next year...but will the power be there?

I gave him a C. Dissapointing, but not horrible year.

According to Fangraphs, 23 RF'rs qualified for the batting title in both leagues. Of these, Markakis came in tied for 18th place with regards to WAR.
From me he gets a D, as his overall contribution was well below average.

C seems too obvious for me. D is too harsh.

I've been going through grades for all players in my head, and I think the way I've been doing it is: take this season's contribution and assess that against the individual's past performance (75% weight) and future expectation (25% weight). In a grading scenario, I don't know that it is fair to compare a player to anyone except their past and future(expected) selves. Else you just may as well use OPS+ as your guideline.

My Grading scale:
Offense: (C-) Although his OPS+ was 109, he was below average for a RF in the AL.
Defense: (C+) - Most metrics show him to be slightly below average but I'm satisfied with his defense. He's got a strong accurate arm and plays RF at Camden Yards as good as anyone. He struggles on balls blooped in front of him and his foot speed is average at best.
Played to Ability: (C-) He definitely had a below average year for his own ability, but I'm definitely lowering my expectations from him now on. I don't think he'll ever have the power we'd hope for.
Overall: I gotta give him a C although he's on the low side of that C mark.
