    2011 GTP: Alfredo Simon

More up and down from Simon, but if you look at his pitch values, should he be starting?

    I will give him a C.

He did a decent job at times.

He is a reliever who had to start for a losing team and held his own.

Maybe a C is too low when I think about it but that's where I will grade him.

I thought he was going to spend the year in jail. Unfortunately, at the end of the season he was one of our most consistent pitchers (that isn't saying much). Considering the expectations going into the season for the cavalry and zero expectations I had for Simon, I was generous to him and gave him a B. His B is based more on performance vs. expectations I had for him, and his performance vs. the rest of our starters, more than his performance vs. the league (if that makes sense.)

C - I was actually surprised by how well he pitched at times as a SP. But overall he's likely to be one of the last guys in a contending team's bullpen. Which of course makes him our second or third best pitcher. I'd pencil him into the long-man role next year. We somehow need to add about 5-6 better pitchers before OD, wit hopes that Matusz is at least one of them.

Gave him a C. He had several outstanding starts, but was too inconsistent to rank him any higher. I expect he will compete for a back of the rotation spot next spring, and if he doesn't get it, he will be our RH swing man.

I gave him a C. If he only he could develop better command of his pitches there might be something there.

I gave him a B because frankly I didn't expect to get anything out of him this year and he ended up being out 3rd best starter.

    C. Good starts, and bad starts, but he did fill in for us when we needed someone so amybe my grade should be higher.

    B. Performance vs expectations. He will be a valuable part of the bullpen and spot starter, but I don't think he should be in the 5 man rotation.

    D. I loved his good starts and cringed at his bad starts. I too figured that he'd be in jail for the whole season so the innings (some of them quality!) that he gave us down the stretch really make me hope/imagine 'what if'. (But) the fact is, Buck seemed to be speaking offhandedly directly to Alfredo when he kept repeating throughout Aug/Sept that he needs to find guys that he can count on day in and day out. He needs guys that will deliver the same type of performance from game to game, and then he can know how to manage his resources. During Aug and Sept, no started exhibited less consistency from start to start than Simon, so I gave him a D. Buck was begging him to show him the same performance from game to game. I'm not even sure if Buck intends to let Simon compete for a rotation spot next year (although I'm not sure that he has enough alternatives to not give Simon that chance).

Anywhere in that C to B- range. Compared to what I expected, he would get an A, but overall around a C.

I always take expectation into play. Supposed to be reliever, ended up one of our "best" starting pitchers. He was inconsistent, but in general gave the team a chance to win and was a serviceable back of the rotation kind of guy. He gets a B.
