Week 6: Redskins vs. Eagles, 10/16/11

I got an unexpected call from one of my wife's uncles Saturday...looks like we will be going to the game. Since I don't possess a "smartphone" (or any mobile phone, for that matter), I won't be posting any game updates. I will leave everyone with some talking points, though....

This is a trap game. The Eagles are 1-4, but are an underachieving 1-4 rather than an untalented 1-4. Regardless of team records, they usually have what it takes to make things really annoying for the Redskins.

The defense needs to keep it disciplined. There will be opportunities for blitzes due to the Swiss cheese-resembling offensive line, but if it gets too out of hand, or too many of those "zero blitzes" are called, that is asking for trouble. Jackson, Maclin, Avant, and Celek have all proven to be thorns in the side in past matchups, and they must be accounted for. Vick, as always, will be dangerous if given too much space. Balanced pressure is key. It will keep their receivers covered, and keep enough rushers around to mess with his decision making.

The offense needs to run the ball, then run it some more. Even if Hightower is limited/out, Torain and Helu will be able to pick up the slack, and then some. The porous Philadelphia run defense will give the Redskins a chance to punish at the line and control the clock. In addition, this will limit the chances Grossman has to turn the ball over via the passing game, which is very important, seeing as he averages around a turnover per game.

The Redskins must stay motivated. This is not only a trap game, but a statement game. A victory will help put the debacle of 11 months ago behind them, and all but eliminate a division rival from both a division crown and a playoff spot. The boot must be put to the throat, and the pressure applied. Letting up yields games like this one, where the Eagles were let back in time and time again while the offense and special teams sputtered at crucial junctures, stunningly setting events in motion for the demise of Sean Taylor (he left the game early with the injury he was recovering from when he was later shot in his home and killed). I was at that game, and it wasn't pretty. One could feel the tension, and the momentum slipping away. The weather will be better for this game. Hopefully, so will the result.

This is absolutely a statement game for the Skins. Win this game and I'm off the fence and on the side of the Skins being a playoff team. I bet on the Eagles though when it was a pick em earlier this week. This is their season and I think they'll win and make a statement..

I'll be at the game. Any advice on the best way to get there? Planning to take metro from New Carrolton.

Go Skins...Please don't repeat the MNF debacle from last season.

I have a tough time believing the Eagles will lose 5 in a row. I can't view this as a "trap" game because Philly is actually favored.

I'd like to see the offense put up some points this week utilizing Davis, Cooley and the running game. The Eagles offense can strike so quickly, they won't be able to nurse a small lead.

The Redskins can't match the Eagles team speed on the outside, but hopefully they can exploit the banged up offensive line.

Davis really hasn't been as big of a weapon the last few weeks (mostly because teams are game planning against him now). I'd love to see the Skins just pound the running game against the soft Eagle defense. I want all 3 backs to be used to keep them fresh. Keep that Philly offense off the field! We saw last year what they can do to us, and they have just about all of the same weapons now.

True. I think they have a matchup problem with Davis and an advantage on the receivers. I started Helu in one fantasy game because of byes to most of my players. I'd like to see him flip the field once or twice.

you and Don represent the 12th man!

This is frustrating. They are doing things right but can't score. Really need a damn QB.

    With that interception number 2....

I won't defend Rex overall because he's been bad, but I wouldn't really put the first pick on him. That was more on Davis, and would have worked as a good punt if it wasn't for the 15 yard penalty.

Yeah, that's basically a punt. The second one sucked. They need to sustain drives after the defense has been on the field all day. They're lucky to be down only 17. This could easily be a 4 td lead.

Need to score on the opening drive. Tall task with 2 oline injuries.

Yeah, the line injuries are a big problem; hopefully, they aren't that serious.

This was a game the Skins were supposed to be able to run the ball really well, but so far they only have 19 yards on 6 carries. They need more productivity there. Of course they need more plays on offense to give the running game more of a chance. I obviously wouldn't abandon the run either.

Attention NFL, if Niles Paul is on the field, they are going to run.

    Frustrating play-calling there.
