Dipoto hypothetical situation
When Dipoto took over the Dbacks job, he decided that 2 of their best trade pieces needed to be dealt.
So, he decided to deal Haren and Jackson.
So, let's say he comes here and decides that he wants to trade Jones and Guthrie because he feels that is the best way to get an infusion of talent.
Will he be allowed to do that?Last edited by Sports Guy; 10-19-2011 at 11:11 PM.

Well, that's the magic question, is it not? I hope he is... and honestly, I think he would be allowed to. I can't imagine a scenario where an incoming GM doesn't ask questions of that ilk to the ownership group prior to accepting a job like this.

Don't you think that's something they would talk about in the interview? I mean...if that's how he wanted to build the team, I imagine he would say so.

Peter and Buck have been meeting regularly for some time. I would imagine that they've got a pretty good idea of what they want to do going forward.
If Dipoto wants to deal those two, I would guess it would have to go along with the plan that Buck and PGA have layed out.

Without a doubt he would be allowed to do that trade. I believe that the new gm and Buck will be allowed to run the team

Who have we traded of value to the Orioles outside of the fire sale of the late 90's? Bedard was looking for a huge payday and we moved him because he didn't fit in the financial plan for this team. Guthrie is in the last year of his deal so I say that a GM could deal him, but Adam Jones? I doubt that Adam Jones gets moved unless he comes out and either says that he will not extend or he is asking for more than what the Orioles will give him. I hope the new GM comes in and cleans house to be honest.

If the Angels want him this situation is unlikely to occur. The O's have to get passed that hurdle first.

Yup. Obviously, I think PA and Buck are trying to find a GM who generally has the same ideas and blueprint they want going forward but hypothetically if Dipoto wanted to trade guys Buck or PA wanted to keep he wouldn't be allowed to trade them. I will be flabbergasted if Markakis, in particular, was allowed to be traded even if the new GM and or Buck wanted to do it.

Angelos is an intelligent lawyer; his baseball IQ is barely in double digits, unless it's based on profits realized while providing a substandard product to his customers. I really have doubts that any of the bright, young up-and -coming minds would want to come into this situation where they'd be limited in their abilities to do their jobs because of a mindset at the top that doesn't understand what a baseball team needs to be successful in today's market.

I think Buck wants to be in a win now mode, and the GM's job is going to be to restock and rebuild the farm system through an improved scouting and development organization.
In other words, NO, the new GM will not be "allowed" to trade our best Major League trade chips.

Well, MacPhail was allowed to trade Bedard and Tejada, so it can't be said that Angelos would never allow a key player to be traded. I think it would depend on what was coming back -- pretty sure it would have to include some players who were going to play for the big club right away (which was also the case when Bedard and Tejada got traded).

The question is what does Buck want to happen. If he is as smart of a baseball mind as he should be he already knows what needs to be done. I personally would like to see us add Fielder & Darvish for starters. I still think the Orioles would be better served trading Guthrie than giving him a 3 or 4 year deal. I dont see Jones extending at a reasonable price ...But these guys must be traded for Major league talent ...Not roster fodder.

They both should be dealt, regardless of who the GM is.
