Maybe being high on Beck was the first mistake.
They saw mobility in the pocket and a strong arm. But, they are now seeing his shortcomings: poor/slow decision making, sloppy "ball handling", and poor accuracy (at times).

So, what early picks do you wish they hadn't made? At the time, I was glad they went with Kerrigan/Jenkins over any of the QBs available. Looking back, Dalton over Jenkins would be easy to swallow. But, is that only because of (a) Jenkins' injury and (b) Dalton's easy schedule to date? IMO, it's crippling to draft the wrong guy high in the draft at QB. I would have probably liked them to take someone like Kapernick in Round 4-ish, but I'd rather have Helu. I just don't think they could have adequately addressed QB in the draft last year without reaching too high or missing out on someone else.

The Shanny's have to basically fill every position on the depth chart, and QB is one they still obviously need to fill. But, I don't see a move they should have made that they haven't. They just weren't in position to get the right guy.

Dalton went ahead of Jenkins in the 2nd.

Again, I like how the draft ended up, but it would have been nice to get a qb if there wasn't a run on locker and ponder.

Good point. Presumably, they could traded up if they really wanted to go for Dalton - but it probably would have cost us the Helu pick.

OK, I didn't know you were so high on Dalton.

I honestly didn't think Dalton would be very good. He just didn't strike me as having the right mentality and I thought his arm wouldn't be strong enough at the NFL level. That just drives home what I already knew...I'm an awful evaluator of college QB talent.

I'd love to have Dalton now. He even seems like the type of QB that would fit in Shanahan's offense. Mobile, smart, accurate...

    Oh well.

Obviously Dalton is head and shoulders above Beck, but they are similar QB's...and who knows, Dalton may look like Beck in this offense.

After the first rounders I liked him better than anyone else out there, I thought he was a good fit for our system. I wasn't so high on him that I had a problem waiting for next year's crop though.

They traded down a ton of times to get to that point. At one point they were in position to have Kerrigan and then pick up Dalton at the end of the first.

I didn't mind the approach they took though, I was ok with filling whatever holes and then coming back for a QB this year.

Yeah this is pretty much what I was thinking too. It was right before the draft people were talking about the kind of qbs Shanny liked. Gotta remember though it's Kyle's offense more than Shanny's.

That's not correct. They started off with the number 10 and their second rounder (after cinci). They moved back to 16 and picked up Kerrigan and jax's 2nd (after was). Dalton was picked with like the third or fourth pick in the second. Then Jenkins was picked. The second second kept getting pushed back so they could pick up hankerson, helu, Gomes, and Paul. I can't remember the exact order off the top of my head. Now they could have packaged their 2 seconds and moved up, but that would mean no helu or hankerson--and that's assuming you could find a partner.

Ok, I could be wrong, I thought we had another trade in between there that we traded down with. I think it was after day 1 that I was hoping Dalton fell to us. I'm sure they could have found a way to move up a couple spots and get him, but they were worried about quantity over quality this year. Can't say I blame them, but I could have lived without Gomes or Thompson I think.
