Hey SG, do you own a Gibson SG guitar? I realized you probably should.

You can get bad players for free any time. I think the assumption (yes, yet to be verified, yes, we should be skeptical) is that they like something Eveland has changed and think he'll be better going forward. Teams with good scouting and analysis identify players like this well. The '08 Rays had most of their pen made up of castoffs and rejects and guys with 6.43 ERAs in '07.
We'll see if Duquette and his new guys have changed anything. I'll leave the door open.

Has he hired anyone in pro(or MiL) scouting that is new that could already be pushing for this?
On top of that, even if this is the case, I still don't get why you give up anything of value for him. Do you really think teams are beating down the door for him?
Good chance we see at least 5 pitchers made available in the next 10 days that are as good or better than him.
And what about Japanese FAs? or Mexican league guys? Or slow pitch softball pitchers? Those guys are always out there.

I looked up Slowey after you mentioned him....traded for a PTBNL...had a terrible year last year, pretty big drop in K/9, BUT, had the best BB/9 rate of his career and his previous stats are all positive. He's the kind of guy the O's should trade for. Especially considering it took a PTBNL to get him.

I hate this trade. I hate the Teagarden trade. It doesn't even matter the names of the players. Teams like the Orioles that are 70 win teams should not be trading even C grade prospects for AAAA/fringe MLBers. Not ever!
While the chance of it biting us in the behind are pretty low, the philosophy behind it is deeply troubling. We shouldn't be wasting any time -- and certainly not any resources for these types of players.

The Orioles were in on him up until the trade according to Duquette. I love watching Slowey pitch and I hate that he's with the Rockies now. His high WHIP and HR rate are going to kill him there.
According to this link, the PTBNL was Daniel Turpen.
Turpen, 25, acquired last spring from the Red Sox for catcher Michael McKenry, went 2-4 with a 4.83 ERA and finished 11-for-16 in save opportunities for the Rockies' Double-A Tulsa affiliate.

He was also recently highly rated and comes from a great pitching organization.
Now, he is due more money and the PTBNL could be better than what we gave up for Eveland but whatever...He has a chance to be a difference maker and was out there for pennies on the dollar.

Eveland certainly isn't better, but he's probably the 8th best starter on this team (Reyes and VandenHurk being worse), while Slowey could have been our 4th best. I really don't understand why we didn't get Slowey unless we had a different offer out to the Twins than we had to the Dodgers. I'm pretty disappointed but I'm not really sure either pitcher is going to put up a sub-5.00 ERA next year.

SG, you just haven't acquired DD's taste for trades yet, is all.

Ugh.
Once again we waste resources. Not saying I don't want Eveland, but we continue to give away minor leaguers. The idea was to bring in as much talent to the organization top to bottom. We are lessening our chances of doing that by doing these moves. We have now given up 3 prospects (and one more through PTBNL) for two guys who you should be able to get by asking nicely (yes I know I am exaggerating). Those 3 players could be added to real deals to maximize the value we get back and bring more talent to the organization.
I'm buying him a sweatervest.

Easy:
Brandon Webb
John Maine
Oliver Perez
Mark Prior
Jamie Moyer
Ross Ohlendorf
Nelson Figueroa
Kenshin Kawakami
Billy Buckner
Kei Igawa
Dave Bush
Kevin Millwood
Jeff Suppan
Garrett Olson
Armando Galarraga
Nate Robertson
Aaron Heilman
Kyle Davies
Yusmeiro Petit
Chris Jakubauskas
Royce Ring
Matt Torra
Luke French
Zach Duke
Scott Kazmir
etc.
Really, just look at a list of minor league free agents and most of the pitchers on there will be better than Eveland...
