When Eveland was good in 2008, he threw almost 90 MPH on average...Last year, he was under 88.

So, the Orioles are finally doing something different... and it's still not good. You're making a huge issue out of moving minor leaguers who are C-prospects with limited potential and complaining about adding AAAA depth with them. That's not really a huge issue to be getting upset about. There are legitimate players in the O's system with real shots to be starters in the majors... and we haven't moved any of them to any other team. Huge non-issue here.

Others have pointed this out, but it bears repeating. If DD is coming out the "loser" on these minor trades what's going to happen if/when he completes a more substantial trade.
Say what you want about MacPhail but I think we can all agree he wouldn't have given up 4 players for a back up C and a journeyman Pitcher.

Well, Eveland is a lefty so that increases his chances and his usefulness if you're looking for a positive. He can be used in the pen and make a spot start.

Typical Orioles. In the end, noone wanted our slop for established major leaguers who were any good. Same story every year. DD would have had to pull a rabbit out of his hat to improve the pitching staff.

I'm not willing to say that potentially losing some very minor deals means you're going to get your clock cleaned on larger trades. I know a lot of folks want to take everything to its logical conclusion and say that this brings a sense of doom and foreboding to the organization. But losing a trade 1.5 wins to 0.75 wins isn't the same thing as losing a trade 25 wins to 12, nor would the same processes or philosophies necessarily apply.

The guy is garbage regardless of what we gave up for him. 29 innings last year means nothing...in LA, a pitchers park...in the NL to boot. SG said his velocity is down for a 5th straight year as well...his ERA, K and BB rates outside of those 29 IP last year are terrible. He's just another AAAA guy.
The only relevance to this deal I see is that we'll actually have "that AAAA guy" on the roster to replace the inevitable pitcher who gets hurt or is ineffective -- as opposed to waiting until some other team releases a similar guy, like we did with JoJo Reyes last year.Last edited by NewMarketSean; 12-08-2011 at 04:03 PM.

Come on guys! We traded two players who are likely never going to even make the big leagues for a guy who has all ready made the big leagues. When looking at the big picture, this trade really doesn't matter. SG you keep saying these guys had "value." We just saw their value. They get you a borderline pitcher who may or may not be the #5 starter on a bad team. To put it in more simple terms "they have no value".

I think you have summed it up perfectly. We couldn't shop our core (Adams, Weiters, Markakis, etc), young pitchers with promise (Arretia, Matusz, Britton) or prospects (Bundy, Machado, . . . ah did I mention Bundy and Machado). That leaves the usual suspects - Tillman, Bergy, Berken, Reimold, etc. and that, sir, will not get it done.
