Torain Released; Robinson Promoted from Practice Squad

In advance of Sunday's Week 17 contest versus the Eagles, the Redskins have released running back Ryan Torain, and promoted wide receiver Aldrick Robinson from the practice squad. Torain had been considered as having the inside track at the starting running back spot before being derailed by injuries and other difficulties. Meanwhile, Robinson had spent all season on the practice squad after fumbling two punt returns and catching no passes in limited preseason action.

    I disagree with this move.

Torain has shown he can be an effective back in the zone blocking scheme and he's still young. Yes, Helu and Royster look good, but why just give up on Torain? He didn't even have any trade value?

Seems to me that Torain is only really valuable in the Shanahan system, so we can part ways for now and re-sign him later, if necessary. I'm not really worried about it either way.

Disagree with this move, too. I'm assuming next years depth chart will include Helu and Royster...I think it's a 50/50 shot that Hightower comes back....and a trio of Hightower/Helu/Royster would be good.

However if it's Helu and Royster I think Torain is a great back to be mixed in with them.

But this is the NFL and crazy roster stuff happens all the time. I wouldn't be shocked at all if Torain suited up for the Skins again.

This move obviously means we're taking Richardson in the first.--just kidding.

Torain's season has been very fishy. He had 100 yard game in week 4 when Hightower was not 100%. Then he had a series of bad games which coincided with Beck at qb. But Shanahan was really down on him. They brought in Choice for a week. They seemed to lose all confidence in him. Coach kept mentioning "consistency" when describing him, or lack thereof. I translate that as "poor practice habits.". One aspect that I do like, is that if there was a problem, it's been kept in house.

He was clearly the third string, but I thought his style complimented Helu's very well. Helu could tire out a defense and torain could finish them off. I look for the third guy to be a contributer on st a la Cartwright.

Could they have traded him? Was he under contract for 2012 or was he a FA.

Shanny said next year is Helu, Royster and Hightower, so he's planning on him coming back. That's a solid 3 RB.

If they're all healthy, it's indeed a pretty solid corps.

I either read or heard shanahan say that another team was ready to pick up Robinson off the practice squad, and this move was to protect him. However, there were other choices to cut than Torain.
