    Power Steering Fluid Question

    So drive a 2005 Mariner I have been hearing some noises when I turn the wheel lately, and I checked the power steering fluid and it's low. I also don't know when the last time it's been changed, if ever. My car is getting close to 100K miles so I want to change the fluid myself, and it seems like it wont be too difficult.

    So I checked to see what kind of PS fluid my car takes and it says Motorcraft MERCON ATF, which is also transmission fluid. I have some MERCON ATF fluid sitting around my house. Will it be OK or should the bottle specifically say "Power Steering Fluid" on it too?

    You will be fine if that's what your manufacturer says for your model.

    I drove around a 1997 Plymouth Voyager when I lived in Pittsburgh in late 2009 to mid 2010, had almost 300k miles on it and if I was driving anywhere over 100 miles round trip I would have to stop on the way and add power steering on the way, what a lovely experience. But the ladies sure love a Purple Van....

    It's not the exact brand...but it's the transmission fluid that the manual calls for. Also, the Valvoline bottle doesn't day "power steering fluid" like some combo fluids do.

    2006 and newer may be a bit pickier, but you are very fine with what you have.

    I did it yesterday. Took me about 45 mins all said and done. One of the easiest things I have ever done. They charge $100 for this at auto shops. I did it for free since I bought the transmission fluid for another job.
