    Question on Kyle Hudson

Can anyone explain why Hudson cannot be p[laced on waivers, pass through, and be retained by the O's? This is what would typically happen with a player who is booted off the 40-man roster. I don't understand why it's different in this case.

Here's what Roch said on the masn site...
"Also, I've been asked about outfielder Kyle Hudson, who was designated for assignment when the Orioles signed Taiwanese left-hander Wei-Yin Chen. I'm told that Hudson can't be placed on waivers. The Orioles must trade or release him, and we could know the outcome by Friday."

Any reason the O's could not resign him after he gets released?

Yes and no, apparently theres some issue where he couldnt play for the O's or an affiliate before May 15th. That's been both reported (by Roch I'm pretty sure) and disputed (by the link in the post before yours), but if it's true, I'm sure he'd prefer to join another organization and not miss a month plus.

    Thanks for the link.

I see from today's MASN column, Roch says Hudson was just realeased by the O's. While we all know Hudson was not going to be an elite all-star, it bothers me some that we allowed a young, former 4th round pick to leave the organization for nothing. I don't see why we had the need to rush him from Frederick all the way up to the majors and put him on the 40-man roster. Is he not the same player as Angle with less defensive ability (do we need two of them on the 40-man roster, let along the 25-man roster as happened last year?).

While Hudson has no power and was clearly overmatched in the big leagues, he's not chooped liver. For the year, he batted .286 and he had 41 steals, which I believe was secondin the entire O's organization next to Miclat. I hope he re-signs with us when possible. Again, i don't think he'll be a superstar, but why put yourself in a position to have to get rid of a 25 yo with 40+ steals for nothing? That's a no-win situation.

Ask yourself this, "Were the 28 major league at bats he got worth losing him?" Why did we bother bringing him up to expose him to this?

It evidently has nothing to do with his MLB at bats and everything to do with the fact that he was rule5 excluded. The person who was in charge of the 40 man roster at the time that he was added is not the person in charge of it now, and they must feel differently regarding his value.

Or, MacPhail didn't place a high value on him either, needed a warm body in Baltimore, and didn't care that the roster decision might cost us Hudson in the long run. While some fans may miss him personally, he won't be particularly missed professionally and will likely be replace by what he is, another minor league free agent.

I am personally Happy that we have Jai Miller on our 40. If I were drafting a team by look and body type, he would be on it.

It appears with the new CBA, Hudson could be resigned after 30 days. If we wanted to.

    From Steve M MASN today

Earlier this week the Orioles officially released outfielder Kyle Hudson. He had been designated for assignment and taken off the 40-man roster when the Orioles added pitcher Wei-Yin Chen. Because he is "draft excluded," Hudson could not be resigned to the major league roster before May 15, but I have heard the Orioles are open to bringing Hudson back with a minor league contract and he would be able to play in the minors for any affiliate before then.
Now it will be up to Hudson, who began last season with Frederick but later made it all the way to Baltimore, who is free to sign with any team.

That is totally different than what Roch led me to think.

Of course. Seems like something that could have easily been explained by the O's front office at the time. I guess there's a small chance that they, themselves, were unsure of the rules at the time. Otherwise, it was just lazy reporting.

    Rangers Sign Kyle Hudson
By Zach Links [January 28, 2012 at 4:34pm CST]
The Rangers have signed Kyle Hudson to a minor league deal with an invite to Spring Training, according to Executive Vice President of Communications John Blake (via Twitter). The Orioles released the outfielder on Monday.

The 25-year-old hit .296/.375/.336 line with 41 stolen bases in 485 minor league plate appearances last season. Hudson also appeared in 14 Major League games for the O's as a September callup.

No real loss, but I can't say I didn't root real hard for him to succeed. The classic underdog.
