Definitely not a bad contract in my view.

$3 mil guaranteed is definitely palatable.

Yea, that's not too bad of a contract.

If that's the deal, I'm fine with it. Now I just hope he puts up an .889 OPS like he did in 2010 for KC!

Great signing at a very nice price! Excited to see Betemit/Reynolds/Davis at DH/3B/1B this year.

ZiPS is not a fan -- it is projecting .252/.314/.412.
Bill James likes him better, projecting .265/.333/.437

It may be a bit rosy, but I view the signings of Chavez and Betemit as a cumulative +4-5 win move.
Chavez + Betemit = 2.5 WAR
replacing all of Vlad, Scott, Angle, Hudson, Bell, Hudson, Fox, Pie = combined negative 2-3 WAR
Total = +4-5 WAR
If these signings do nothing but remove replacement to below replacement value players from the big league club (and for little money), how can the moves be viewed as anything but positive?

Chavez and Betemit combined will get about as many PA as Vlad got last year, IMO. We will end up giving some PA to guys like Angle, Hudson, Bell, etc., either when injuries arise or in September. And remember, Chavez had a very strong year in Texas but is likely to revert to his career average this year. If it's a 2 win improvement, I'd be satsified.

Good signing. Adds depth to the infield that is needed because of the question mark that is BROB.

That gives us the Dominican player DD promised. Check
TOR starter to come?

Guess it depends what you mean by "necessary." We are required/allowed to have 25 men on the active roster, after all. And, if they, Duquette and Showalter, feel Betemit at 2/$3mil is better than the other cost/talent combinations available, including internal alternatives, then yes, in their eyes this move or a similar one was necessary.
Switch hitter, able to play corner IF and OF positions, and satisfied with a supporting role at a very reasonable salary. He can fill a role on many ML rosters, and ours, as well.

I think it is a necessary signing. He has played SS in his career and if Hardy (who has been injury prone in the past) goes down we will need somebody to play there. You might be thinking Andino could fill that role, and he could, but if BROB isn't healthy he will be playing secondbase.
