For the 120 or so G's where Reimold, Reynolds, Davis and Wieters are playing their regular positions, the primary DH against RH SP would be Endy Chavez. Betemit's past 3 season's average of .284, .354 .467 .821 is preferable to Chavez 3 year average of .290 .325 .393 .718.

Anyone else for giving Melvin Mora a call to play 3B? I'm sure he could use some money for his 61 kids...

Can anyone answer why we gave a 30 year old journeyman 2 years guaranteed!?
Was it the only way he would sign?

What if any one sucks. There's always that risk with any player. What reason do you have to think Betemit will? His production for the past 3 years has been pretty consistent. Beyond that what else can you go on? Look at Adam Dunn? Who would have thought he would implode? Crawford? At least in the case of Betemit we would only be out 3M.

Crawford will bounce back. Dunn is done.
I am not bashing the deal at all...I am glad we didn't get a player like Abreu or Damon... It's a relatively low risk/high reward deal and he's very flexible.
Just curious why they guarantee him a roster spot next year that's all

Like the move to the same degree that it improves the club. Good LH bat verses RHP...he hasn't played > 100 games since 2007, so it is doubtful he plays more this coming season (pinch hitter & semi-regular DH).
The O's have added a lot of these injury/backup type players this offseason (Teagarden, Antonelli, Betemit, Chavez, etc..) IMO, this is why they were attainable. The value is there to help, but the risk for injury is a bit higher.
The O's are adding volume to overcome some of the injury potential. I'd prefer this given the Orioles MiL depth (Adams, Bell, etc...). For those complaining about losing Flaherty/Miller at the end of ST, I'd argue the likely hood that one of the positional guys (outside of Roberts) starts the season on the DL.

Because the salary is still journeyman money, he's actually hit very well the last two years, especially against righties, and he has more value if he DH's, which is what the O's plan to do with him.
If the O's think he can continue to hit righties like he has, then this makes a lot of sense imo.
