    Thumbs up

I am completely neutral on this deal. But, like, why? Why do it? I don't understand.
For the 120 or so G's where Reimold, Reynolds, Davis and Wieters are playing their regular positions, the primary DH against RH SP would be Endy Chavez. Betemit's past 3 season's average of .284, .354 .467 .821 is preferable to Chavez 3 year average of .290 .325 .393 .718.

Anyone else for giving Melvin Mora a call to play 3B? I'm sure he could use some money for his 61 kids...

Can anyone answer why we gave a 30 year old journeyman 2 years guaranteed!?

Was it the only way he would sign?

Because we got two years for slightly more than his actual value per year, according to Drungo?

Over react much? Because you think he'll continue to perform at the level he has been performing. What's the absolute worst thing that could happen as a result of this? It's not exactly Garrett Atkins.

Hmmm I am just curious that's all.

I like his stats against RHP's but jeesh maybe 1 year with an option

He got less than half as much over his entire contract as an injured DH with similar overall numbers, Luke Scott, got for a year he will still be rehabbing in.

We gave him essentially no money.

What if any one sucks. There's always that risk with any player. What reason do you have to think Betemit will? His production for the past 3 years has been pretty consistent. Beyond that what else can you go on? Look at Adam Dunn? Who would have thought he would implode? Crawford? At least in the case of Betemit we would only be out 3M.

Crawford will bounce back. Dunn is done.

I am not bashing the deal at all...I am glad we didn't get a player like Abreu or Damon... It's a relatively low risk/high reward deal and he's very flexible.

Just curious why they guarantee him a roster spot next year that's all

Like the move to the same degree that it improves the club. Good LH bat verses RHP...he hasn't played > 100 games since 2007, so it is doubtful he plays more this coming season (pinch hitter & semi-regular DH).

The O's have added a lot of these injury/backup type players this offseason (Teagarden, Antonelli, Betemit, Chavez, etc..) IMO, this is why they were attainable. The value is there to help, but the risk for injury is a bit higher.

The O's are adding volume to overcome some of the injury potential. I'd prefer this given the Orioles MiL depth (Adams, Bell, etc...). For those complaining about losing Flaherty/Miller at the end of ST, I'd argue the likely hood that one of the positional guys (outside of Roberts) starts the season on the DL.

He hasn't traditionally. In some was he has been better than Jayson Werth as a National. Certainly Better than Carl Crawford.

Then he's cheap enough to release.

Because the salary is still journeyman money, he's actually hit very well the last two years, especially against righties, and he has more value if he DH's, which is what the O's plan to do with him.

If the O's think he can continue to hit righties like he has, then this makes a lot of sense imo.

Who is likely to beat him out in ST? The idea is to have a guy to take 300-400 PA against RHSP. Who is better suited to do that, who is currently on the team. Who has better splits?
