    VA Tech @ MD

1:45 left and still no game thread on a Saturday afternoon.

I haven't looked closely at the alternatives, but even before Faust just shot that second missed front end of a 1-and-1, I was thinking I might not want Faust in there because of his FT shooting.

So Faust missed the front end of a 1-and-1 twice. Mosley, the senior, makes a great play to get to the line for 3 and calmly makes all 3. Then Stoglin misses both FT's in the bonus. Then Mosley, the senior, calmly drains both of his.

Ahh, Stoglin finally makes 1... and misses the 2nd.

Up by 3 with 10 seconds left, let's see what Howard can do from the line...

... makes both - 5 point lead. That better do it.

Oops, lead down to 2. And Stoglin to the line with 3.6 seconds left. You've got to make them both or VT has a feasible chance to tie (or win).

Makes the first... makes them both.

    Go Terps!

I watched. It was ugly (like most VT games). Just glad to hold on for the win. That was a rough 30 Stoglin put up.

I'd place Maryland squarely in the middle of the pack of the ACC. It appears, right now, that dook, UNC, UVA and FSU have great shots to make the NCAA tournament and NCSt is right there.

MD will need to string a few quality wins together to put themselves on the bubble.

    Next year should be better.

They are a long way from the bubble right now. They haven't beaten anyone yet. Their three ACC wins are again Ga Tech, Va Tech, and Wake who are not very good. The ACC will get a max of 5 teams in the tournament anyway, maybe only 4.

I'm not as confident about that as you are.

They are certainly going to miss Mosley, but I think Faust can replace most of his production, plus Len will have had a full year to adjust and you're adding Cleare. And everyone else will have another year of experience under their belts.

Tough for me to envision them not being better next year.

People are underestimating Layman. I have heard from a bunch of people that MD fans are probably expecting too much form Cleare right away, and not enough from Layman. Cleare is a pretty raw talent. Layman, on the other hand, is absolutely tearing it up in high school right now and has risen in a few recruiting ranking services.

Both Layman and Cleare are going to be real good. They are top recruits. The problem is there are many good recruits coming into the ACC next year besides those two. The ACC is real down right now and has been for a couple of years. Maryland is getting better but so are other ACC teams. Maryland needs more good players to be better. It will take a couple of years.

I'm not expecting a ton from either of them to start. They'll be freshmen, and I learned long ago not to buy into recruiting hype too much. But if nothing else Cleare can give you more depth in the front court, which is always critical.

In the end, I agree with accinfo. I think it will take a few years to get this program back to where we think it belongs. But I do expect that they will be a better overall team next year, even with the loss of Mosley.

Faust needs to grow alot. I have a hard time relying on any freshman to make an instant impact unless they are much highly recruited then Layman or Cleare. Between Len, Pankey, and Padgett, I doubt Cleare makes a huge impact next year. Layman could. I'm hoping Layman is huge next year.

Freshman you just have to wait and see. Seth Allen could end up being the biggest impact freshman if he can handle the ball. Right now, Pe is the only thing that evenly remotely resembles a PG and even he has struggled a lot with the turnovers. The good thing is with the 3 guys we add ( quite possibly we'll sign someone in the spring as well) they'll be legit scholarship players and competition within the team for rotation spots.

I think people are really missing the big picture with Faust. I find him to be really polished on defense and a decent slasher already on offense. Obviously, his shooting needs a ton of work, but I think he's a much better player overall than most are giving him credit for.

I agree whole-heartedly, and I think you're going to see a very large improvement from him next year as well.
