He could be thinking:

1) If he can keep FIU on the path to respectability, bigger fish than Rutgers may come calling.
2) Who knows how long Al Golden will remain content at Miami (Cristobal's alma mater), especially with NCAA sanctions coming.
3) The Big "East" football future is very much in doubt, especially since there may be no automatic BCS bid after 2013.
4) Average temps this time of year are much more pleasant in Miami, FL than they are in Piscataway, NJ.

He's thinking that the Big East is crumbling, and now is probably a poor time to get involved. He'll get better offers than RU most likely.
