    Luck

Wow, no thread about this show?

I love Milch. I thought the first episode was excellent.

I recorded it on my dvr but haven't got around to watching it yet. I hadn't even heard of it until two days before it aired but it does look good.

I was talking to Patterson (the writer of the linked article) last night, as he lives in my neighborhood (and hangs out occasionally in my local dive - McNulty's been there) and I think he gets it right in his review. There's lots of good parts in motion, and lots of talent attached to this thing. There are hiccups and awkward grabs at emotion/power in that first episode, but there's real pathos in some of the smaller scenes.

I'm not a huge Milch fan, but I'll give this a chance.

I watched the pilot last night. I definitely enjoyed it and will probably stick with this show. Lots of fun shady characters.

I didn't like the acting job of the degenerate gambler who had the good picks. I cringed during his "America the beautiful" rendition.

It felt awkward to me - in part because they came close to pulling it off. The instinct was right, but the play was wrong.

I still maintain that's not a dive; its just a solid bar. Floor ain't sticky enough.

I can see being put off by Milch. He's a different kinda cat altogether. Your friend is absolutely right about the dialogue. I had to rewind a few times to try and pick up on stuff. The thing I like about Milch is that he has a way of capturing the real way people interact with each other. Other writers make it painfully obvious that its a TV show (I'm looking right at you, Terrance Winter). To me, he's much more subtle and that's how it is in the world.

I thought it was pretty good. Nolte and Hoffman seem like they're bringing their A game. I'll definitely keep watching.

So far I'm really enjoying the show. Though at times I feel like they (the writers) are trying to create too much story line with too many characters. Other than that though, some great performances.

Of course I may partly be biased since I look at the mountains in the background of the show on a daily basis and make my fair share of trips to Santa Anita.

I have been enjoying it and I really thought it was amping up, with a particularly good last episode. Now it has been cancelled due to 3 horse deaths and there are only two more episodes set to air.

Now this is a huge bummer. Also feel this show was really starting to ramp things up. But probably for the best though considering the third death of a horse.
