    2012 Academy Awards

I won't be doing an Oscar pick contest this year as I currently don't have a working computer and I have no idea when that will be resolved. If anyone would like to take over that would be great but I figured I would start a thread to discuss the nominations and eventually the show. I'm shocked by the lack of Drive. I haven't seen it but Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is the worst reviewed best picture nominee in history. I'm not sure how i feel about the Bridesmaids supporting actress nomination.

I think this is one of the worst Academy Award nominee list, if not the worst.

A lot of good films and performances were left off.

I may not watch it this year.

It wasn't a great year for movies, IMO. And I never watch much of the show, because it is too long and drawn out and self-absorbed. The only reason to watch is in case some hot actress wears a really hot dress. I'd rather just find out the results, and see the photos of the girl in the hot dress, the next morning.

I'm not sure that any of this is new. The Oscars have been rewarding self-serious mediocrity and utter pablum for decades.

That's what sucked about Mad Men not being on this year and not getting nominated for the Emmys, Golden Globes, etc....no Christina Hendricks at award shows showing off her...um...golden globes.

Crash over Brokeback Mountain in '05 is probably the best example of this.

Forrest Gump and Dancing with Wolves are equally egregious. Moreso, even.

Shakespeare in Love over Saving Private Ryan??? I guess I'm in the minority on this, but I hated American Beauty.

All of those are notable snubs, but for me the worst pick was going with Adrien Brody over DDL as Bill The Butcher in Gangs of New York.

Man we gotta do the contest. I need to uphold my annual mediocre/below mediocre placement!

I hope someone decides to do it. I'd like to take part but I just can't run it.

There are a lot of good films this year, the academy just seems to be ignoring most of them.

Whats really crazy is that the Academy expanded the best picture category to as many films as they felt they needed and they picked probably 2 or 3 films that actually deserved it.

Ha. Of course, I actually like Ordinary People. (Though not as a win over Raging Bull.)
