Makes more sense how? It's pretty clear that the primary consideration was geography, with the added consideration that it would have been ridiculous not to pair UNC/Duke when matching up the four NC schools. Syracuse is the closest school to BC, and Pitt is the closest to Maryland once you pair up the two VA schools and take UVA out of the picture. Syracuse and BC are closer to each other than either is to any other existing or incoming ACC school.
There is nothing about Syracuse that makes it a more natural rival or pairing than Pitt for Maryland. It's just that as fans we'd like to have the more traditional basketball power of Syracuse for an annual home and home than the newer power Pitt. But given time, I imagine that we can learn to develop a good animosity toward the University of Pittsburgh to match or at least give a favorable imitation of what many of us feel toward their NFL team because of our support of the Ravens.
I would have liked to have seen a 19 game schedule with 6 consistent home and home teams, then there's a game each to play the other 7 schools. Keep many of the traditional rivalries from the conferences along with some logical geographic rivalries.
So something like this:
MD: Virginia, Duke, Pitt, Syracuse, NCST, BC
Virginia: MD, VaTech, NCST, Clemson, Wake, UNC
VaTech: UVA, PITT, Syracuse, WF, Miami, BC
Duke: UNC, WF, NCST, MD, GT, FSU
UNC: Duke, NCST, WF, Clemson, GT, UVA
NCST: UNC, Duke, WF, UVA, MD, GT
Wake: UNC, Duke, NCST, VaTech, UVA, FSU
Clemson: GT, FSU, Miami, UNC, UVA, Syracuse
GT: Clemson, FSU, Miami, UNC, Duke, NCST
FSU: Miami, GT, Clemson, BC, Duke, PITT, WF
Miami: FSU, GT, BC, Syracuse, PITT, VaTech
BC: Syracuse, PITT, Miami, FSU, MD, VaTech
PITT: Syracuse, MD, BC, VaTech, Miami, FSU
Syracuse: PITT, BC, MD, VaTech, Miami, Clemson
