Was listening to Preston on 105.7 this morning.
He mentioned read $7 Million plus, Ray Lewis 5+ million, Lee Evans $1 Mill roster bonus plus $2 Million salary. Boldin $6 Million. J Johnson $3million
He also discussed deals that reward the team for stepping up while the player was at his peak.
He said he doesnt see anyway they can afford to pay Ed Reed $7 Million for his production in 2011.He said it doesnt make sense to extend the contract to include a bonus that would excelerate based on his closeness to retirement.
Also Iimagines guys like Zibikowski & Nakamura that are starting to get more expensive andhavent broken into the starting line up.
Thoughts ...Additions???
Great breakdown here:
Ravens Cap
As you can see
A couple things, his first assumption is that Grubbs cap number would be $4mill (Yanda's). No way I think we can get him for that. Those advocating for tagging him, would put us at 10 mill...and already over the cap.The Salary Cap for 2012 has not yet been set, but the rumor is that it will not change substantially from 2011, so we’ll work with a $125M Salary Cap for now in trying to set the roster. ...snip for details...Just signing Rice, Grubbs and Gurode brings the Salary Cap to $121,159,586 for 40 players. That leaves less than $4M for the remaining 13 players, or less than $300K/player.
Carr, Williams, Evans can net us about 10 mill saved in cap space. I'd be surprised to see any of them here next year based on that. McClain, Redding, Johnson are UFA's all add up to another 8.5 Mill projected if we keep them. I bet Reddig is let go and his spot is given to McPhee.
Getting Rice to a deal and not being signed to the Franchise Tag is important.
I think we'll be comfortable around the cap number if we don't go add anyone major. If we let Grubbs walk, I bet we could go add someone substantial in another position. Especially if they ended up moving Reid/Oher into the guard spot.
It shall be interesting to see. But Ozzie and company have some work to do.
Well I think the cap hasto rise some. Salaries go up every year not down. As for Carr I agree and I dont see them cutting Cary Williams. I do see them moving on from Zib & Nakamura as they are getting expensivefor reserves.
So - Foxworth (Net $5 Million), Ben Grubbs: $3M ,Jarret Johnson: $3.5M,Cory Redding: $2.5M (His salary in 2011 – no bonus) • Brendon Ayanbadejo: $775,000 (His salary in 2011 – no bonus), Haruki Nakamura or Tom Zbikowski: $775,000), Evans $4,775,000, R Williams 2.725,000, Chris Carr: $4.25M cap number. $2.5M unpaid bonus. Net savings $1.75M.
Thats 24.8 Million in savings
Foxworth was basically dead weight this past season
Carr may stay as he only saves you $1.75
Nakamura, Zibs, And Ayanbadejo can all be replaced with young guys
Redding can be replaced as you said with McPhee
J Johnson looked old at the end of the season and I've never liked McClain
Id replace R Williams w/ Anthony Allen
The Ravens have plenty of dead weight.
Ohhhh. Wow. I didn't realize it was that much. That's actually huge news. Good to see they've got space.
How does that extend year to year, let's say the Ravens are 6 mill under again this year? Will that carry over?
FWIW I still think we should go after Demetrius Bell rather than keeping Grubbs. Rather have the quality LT over the quality LG. Especially given the cap info Miller just pointed out.
There's going to be a couple of players who probably don't get brought back and there's always a surprise or two.
Something to keep in mind is that the salary cap is going to go up tremendously next year. Because of that, the Ravens will likely sign some key free agents this year in a lower cap year as opposed to chasing players next year when every team gets an increase in their lunch money.
They'll have plenty of cap space to make some decent moves this offseason.
The new CBA got rid of all of the unlikely to be earned incentives (ULTBE). Things like Morgan Cox kicking field goals and Oneil Cousins throwing TD passes. When the players didn't meet those incentives, they got to carry that money over for the next year.
Now, the NFL just allows them to carry it over. I would anticipate carry overs to become the new salary cap lingo.
There are some WRs out there that are legit too. The Saints prob can't keep Brees/Nicks/Colston. I'd take the cast off between Nicks/Colston if they lose one. I also really like Bowe. Strong handed guy, who really has an eye for the ball something I think we lack right now, but I doubt he makes it to free agency.
Tulloch is a guy that is interesting. 27, solid MLB. Good tackler. Could be a viable option to not end up paying a couple mill to McClain.
Glad to see the Ravens will be players in FA.
That surprises me some. I mean I'll never complain about upgrading the pass rush but I figured they would be fairly content with Kruger, Suggs, McPhee, and a healthy Ngata. It seems they have little faith in Kindle ever being a contributor. I believe he is an exclusive rights FA this year but you have to wonder if the Ravens cut bait with him.
I really hope that they are considering replacing Cundiff. I know they are saying they are going to keep him, but the fans are always going to be against him now. Imagine if he misses a game winner during the season, especially early? It is going to get really ugly if that happens. They need to just cut bait and go after Rackers or Barth
You won't hear any complaints from me if we use that 6 mill to go nab Mario Williams. The Giants get all the credit for being able to get a pass rush without over blitzing. Williams being added to this team makes me think we might have a better pass rush than they do.
