The reason this deal is a big deal to me is because our only chance to be a good team is if we have a very good GM who finds creative ways to acquire talent. I've been critical of nearly every player move his made (outside of the international signings) but had a glimmer of hope that they were so minor they didn't matter.
It's not this trade -- its what it suggests about his priorities.

It's a little early in the season to put the bag on the head. This isn't a Peyton-less Colts.
It isn't good and the Orioles aren't going to win enough games to be relevant, but its February. I'm ready to watch baseball. I do expect this team to at least play decent baseball and there enough good players to keep me watching.
Spring enthusiasm! Hope springs eternal and all that crap.

Orioles fans are Orioles fans. Even if the team and owner stink. They can not become Nationals fans because they are Orioles fans. People who switch? Well, I wish them well with their team of the half decade. Because they will change several more times in their lives. Especially after the Nationasl leave. Like the Washington teams always do.

At this point I pretty much have resigned myself to hoping Duquette's self proclaimed player evaluation prowess is as good as he says it is. If Wada and Chen don't amount to anything, we're looking at losing 95+ games IMO.

When you lose for 15 straight years, that's gonna happen, I just don't see the need to 6 paragraphs rants about how horrible the team is, how they don't want to win etc... after we trade Jeremy Guthrie?!?! really?! Jeremy? Guthrie?
Again, it's a deal that's a moderate loss at worst and a moderate gain at best. Maybe it's not the deal you wanted, but lets not act like the package we should have gotten for Guthrie was going to turn around the fortunes of this awful franchise.

These trades don't matter much. I don't know what everybody thought Guthrie was worth. I mean, yeah, he was the Orioles' best starter but that's not saying much. The bottom line remains the same. They will get better when they start drafting and developing players better, period. Nobody trades their way to contention and difference-making free agents generally aren't looking to go to an organization that hasn't been above .500 since the Clinton administation. Any outrage drained out of me long ago. I just hope for the best and expect the worst. What else can you do?

Times like this are the benefit of living in Dallas. At least I can watch the Rangers and be reminded of what it's like for an organization to try and get better and actually win a few games.

That analogy makes sense but I think the better one is an abusive relationship. Despite knowing that the relationship is bad and not good for your health you just can not get away from it and can not be objective about it. You can only gain perspective when you remove yourself from it and then you will look back and say why did I ever put up with that. I, like many of you, wish I could walk away and forget about the Orioles. They bring me nothing but pain and offer no hope of getting any better but they hold some power over me I just can not shake.

The flaw in your logic is that you think the Guthrie trade evoked this sentiment. John could have posted this on any given day in the last 10 years. I agree that Guthrie's trade is not going to make the team that much worse, and it certainly won't make it any better. The point is, is that really what we've come to expect? You called this franchise awful. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone who would disagree. That's where the sentiment comes from.
