Bye Bye to Danny O'Brien?

The interesting part here is that I saw yesterday that Locksley plans to run a pro-style offense, which would seem to be much more suited to DOB's strengths than what Crowton ran. Lord help us if they expect CJ Brown to be the QB in that kind of system. Might as well install the triple-option during spring practice now.

Losing DOB would suck, but let's remember, as bad as the offense was last year, O'Brien was pretty bad as well. A bad offense doesn't make you inaccurate. I was hoping the change to Locksley would convince him to stay. Maybe he'll still stay, who knows?

But the flip side to that argument is the year before they changed the offense he was amazing, so I guess it's a chicken or the egg debate, did he have a bad year because of the changes and him not getting along with the coach, or was he just going to have a bad year either way? My money is on the coach who never should have been able to jump straight from UCONN to the ACC.

Eh, he was good his freshman year, but I think it's overstated a bit. Had a completion percentage of 57%. He did have a nice TD/INT ratio, particualry for a freshman. But he also had Torrey Smith on that team, who caught 12 of his 22 TDs.

I admit I am using hindsight, but just as there was reason to be enthusiastic about DOB going into last year, there was also reason to temper some of that enthusiasm.

I am with Tony. I would hate for DOB to leave, but he is not the MD program. If he goes, we'll see a lot o CJB and the two freshmen coming in will certainly be licking their chops.

BTW, I don't think it is at all a given that he would transfer to Vanderbilt. I think James Franklin is pretty happy with Jordan Rodgers, DOB would not waltz right in there as QB1.

DOB is a decent QB who had one pretty good year and one not so good year. I'm not sure why he gets so overrated...maybe it's because he was surrounded by so little talent that he seemed better than he was (sort of like the least ugly girl in a group of really ugly girls). He would have been better in a pro style offense than he was in whatever that offense was the ran last year. But he's not the second coming of Peyton Manning.

    • Worst case scenario, what is the number of at bats that would force them to make a decision on sending him back down?  Hopefully it doesn't come to that, but what would it truly take?  3 for 100 or something nuts like that? The reality is, we've seen multiple examples just recently of a touted debut (though not as touted as Holliday), flailing around, then back to AAA for a reset, and then success in the majors.  Bradish, Rodriguez, Cowser are the clear examples of this, and Rutschman/Henderson had the struggle but didn't need the send-down.  It might require that for Holliday though.  Hopefully not, and still too soon to make that call for sure, but you can't just bat .050 for very long without getting the wrong kind of attention, even as a 20 year old rookie.  You don't have to do great, but you have to do better than that. I do think he's looked better in some recent AB's, including the long fly ball yesterday where he just missed his first homer, but even w/ that, the K's haven't slowed down.  In reality, we are really just 1 or 2 batted balls away from this becoming a non-issue.  If that ball yesterday goes a few more feet onto the flag porch, this discussion is instantly different.
    • That’s interesting.  My expectation was a 3.5-4 WAR type season. I still think he gets close to that.
    • I hate that we can't get any information from minor league rehab stuff. I would love to hear what Means has to say about it, or the coaching staff, or Hyde/Elias. It's tough to have nothing to go on.
    • Rubenstein didn’t do anything.   Anyone who thought that is the type of person who thinks if a pretty girl says hello to them they’ll accept a marriage proposal.
    • From July 19 to July 31, in 48 PA, he had a .326 OPS.  Close!
    • If he starts hitting, he won’t be batting 9th.
    • https://www.theringer.com/mlb/2024/4/18/24132083/oakland-athletics-relocation-sacramento-fan-resistance-boycott   Hope I got that link in there right.  Thought I'd share this story about the A's fan protests.  Futile though they may (definitely) be, its quite admirable.  I find this whole story so heartbreaking for those fans.  Not that hard to imagine something like that in Baltimore; we are fortunate it hasn't and appears that it won't in the foreseeable future.  Seems highly doubtful that Rubenstein turns into a Fisher type - and honestly Camden Yards seems to be the ultimate defense against any kind of relocation - but you just never know. Anyway, even w/o tying this into any Orioles relocation angst - past, present, or future -  this is just a sad sad story.
