CJ Brown is a gimmick QB and cannot run the type of offense Locksley was talking about running. Now, Locksley will probably have to change his offense to meet Browns extreme limited ability to throw the ball but mark my words, this offense will not be productive with him at QB. The O'Brien loss is huge. I can't recall a bigger debacle at the beginning of a regime as this...what an embarrassment to MD Alumni!

I agree with you except for the "gimmick" label for CJ Brown. There are plenty of QBs that have his skill-set and have been successful at the college level. But as you state, they need to be in the right offense, and that's not the offense that Locksley said he planned to run when he was interviewed last week. When the spring practice season begins, Locksley should jump on Route 50 and head east about 30 miles to see first-hand what sort of offense he'll need to run to be successful with Brown.

An AD can have an impact on a program. To what degree depends on the AD, but I know at my school, our AD was very involved with the football program. He didn't control practices or the depth chart obviously, but he is the "head honcho" of the department and spent time with the football program as that was our biggest sport. Just like any job(and maybe I see this more as a military member), every boss that comes in has a different way of running things. Not only that, but the AD sets the standard for the entire department, including all teams. From those basic aspect alone and the fact that you had a new coach AND AD, I can see how that could impact a school a whole lot more then just having a coach or AD change. I can't think of any school that has had a coaching and AD change in any mainstream college sport for the life of me....and of course that only dates back to 1986 so....not too long.

Beyond ridiculous and hypocritical. Let the man go

I think the writer lost his objectivity when he started off with, "My media colleagues seem to be split in their opinions of Maryland football coach Randy Edsall. One camp thinks Edsall is a self-serving, hypocritical turd. The other camp thinks he is a shameless, ruthless disgrace to his profession."
Either way, it's pretty clear Maryland has screwed up this situation. O'Brien must really hate Edsell to deal with all of this instead of just staying.

Well it was an opinion piece and there's no doubt about what his opinion is. He could have maybe done without the opening line, but whatever. He has that job and I don't.
If all his "facts" are true, then it does look very bad of MD to be holding O'Brien hostage.

I think that statement is taking it too far. I don't necessarily agree with how Edsall is handling this (shocker!), but let's not compare this to the other O'Brien kid who plays basketball but can't play at his new school because his old coach at St. Joseph's refuses to release him from his scholarship to go anywhere. There are about 120 schools at the Div 1-A level that play college football, and UM is willing to let DOB go to about 100 of them, many of whom would probably welcome him with open arms and all but anoint him the starter the second he steps on campus.
Without saying so, its clear that Edsall believes Franklin has had improper contact with at least one of his players. That being the case, instead of acting like the guy who says "you can't go here simply because I say you can't" he should go to the NCAA with this. He probably won't end up exposing violations by Franklin since there's probably no smoking gun that would prove it, but maybe he would send a message to Franklin that he needs to back off from his team and at least publicly provide a reasonable explanation for his stance other than the fact that he's just a jerk.
And I'd be remiss if I left out that this whole thing is just another shining example of the ridiculous double-standards that exist in the business of college sports....where kids who are playing sports for their schools and earning them money while not being paid any money themselves (presumably, at least) are at the mercy of their coaches when it comes to whether or not they can transfer and play at another school. Meanwhile, the coaches (who are getting paid, good money) are more than free to skip out on their players to go to any other school they want, whenever they want, and not give a rat's ass about the commitment they made to the players they leave behind.....many of whom are stuck to live with whomever may replace the coach that just turned their back on them. While Edsall is a perfect example of this, he is by no means the root of the problem, it's the NCAA. Right or wrong, Edsall's just exploiting the same double-standard as the coaches who did the same before him and those who will follow him, as long as these rules exist.

Well, my other guess would be that is DOB goes to Vandy and succeeds it could create a situation where the press could say that the UMD brass made a mistake by letting Franklin go. Afterall, the media would likely say, "Franklin and DOB are winning in the SEC, but Md alienated both of them to the point they wanted to leave Md". Point being, it would potentially show that UMD AD made mistakes. And people in power do not want to be made to look bad, hence the reason why they won't let him transfer to Vandy

This is (yet another) huge issue with Edsall. The dude thinks that nobody can see through all the crap he does under his "umbrella of secrecy". This whole O'Brien thing is just ridiculous. There's no question he and Anderson are trying to save their own arses. Give him an unconditional release. Franklin has already made Edsall look ridiculous, and that's because, well, he is ridiculous.
