    New Van Halen album

I'm hoping it grows on me, but I sure ain't impressed after one listen through. Some pretty weak songs.

    Thoughts?

Some things are better left undone, and this album is one of those things.

Personally...it reminds me of old Van Halen records. There are a few songs that will get stuck in your head ("Tattoo", "You And Your Blues", and "Stay Frosty"). Then there are songs that are just there to be loud and badass, but not catchy. I'm not familar enough with the new album to say which songs these are, but they're basically the modern equivalents to songs like "I'm The One", "Atomic Punk", and "On Fire". I'm going to have to go back and listen to all the old DLR Van Halen albums again to see where I would rank it, but it seems to fit in with the other ones, even if it's not as good. Style-wise, it's the same as their old stuff, and that's why I like it. Thus, I would listen to this over anything they released post-1984.

Yeah I do. I'll probably check it out. Altho the reviews here don't fill me with hope.

Just a side note... Alice In Chains is sposed to have an album out pretty soon. I'm looking forward to that one!

Stay Frosty could fit in with any DLR-VH album and still stand out, IMO.

But I agree that a lot of songs are just there to be loud and make noise. Hagar sort of made a point in a recent interview where he said when writing songs with Eddie, Eddie would have some cool licks but have problems turning them into songs, i.e., doing a bridge, etc. That could be some of the problems.

Really, if take away their first album and 1984, there's more misses than hits in all the remaining Roth records. Thus this album probably fits right in.

I listened to a little of it on iTunes and it certainly didn't sound that great to me.

I definitely prefer the DLR Van Halen sound. I liked the first record with Sammy, but they seemed to go downhill after that one.

I still enjoy listening to VHII, Women and Children First, Fair Warning, and especially Diver Down. Sounds like most on here find only the first album and 1984 as "worthy". There's some good stuff in their catalog.
