Givens is playing now on the MLB Network in the Australian Baseball Championships. They've been on the last 3 days in a row. Just thought there might be some interest
Perth just tied it up in what I think is the ultimate game.
Brenden Webb is with Perth, too. Put up a 1.011 OPS (fifth in the league).
It's very good that Givens had a positive experience this winter, plus he got through it healthy and got is at bats in. Hopefully he can carry that into next season and get up to Frederick and maybe even Bowie this year.
Givens has a lot to prove after last season but he certainly took the first steps by having a good season in Australia. This was the first I've seen him since some TV from Aberdeen last year. He still doesn't look like a world beater but he has made some strides from last year when his mechanics at the plate looked horrible. He did look good in the field at 2B. I've heard people report that he was slow. I'm not about to call him speedy but his speed looks average at worst. I missed his first two AB's when he got a single and double. He did take a breaking ball away and spray it down the line for another double later in the game, and easily beat out a high hopper over the mound for an infield single. He certainly doesn't look like a lost cause to me. As for Webb, I'm not sure what his weakness is but obviously he has some if you look at his strikeout numbers even in Australia. He looks like he has a really good eye at the plate and a nice swing. De San Miguel is not a prospect but the O's signed him probably to backup at Bowie or Frederick, I'd guess. Maybe he's coaching material down the line or maybe he's a future scout for the O's in Australia.
