An Interesting Result from DFAing Angle

I was looking at the minor league rosters and realized now that we have DFA'ed Matt Angle we are not projected to have an OFers in the minors on our 40-man roster. Note: Right now I'm assuming Chavez makes the big league club as the 4th OF and Miller either makes it as well or is taken on waivers, since he's out of options.

With the O's parting ways with guys like Henson, Snyder, Hudson, and Angle (probably), we have no minor league players with OF experience on the 40-man roster. This may not be of great concern to some because Hoes and Avery are developing. However, what happens if there is an injury NOW? My guess would be they would add someone like Beerer to the 40-man.

Of additional concern to those interested in the minor league lineups...who plays CF in Norfolk? Beerer and Aldridge have mainly played LF, with some RF experience. I'll guess it's Antoan Richardson as he's really the only candidate with CF experience, though he played less than half his games there last year. I'll assume Hoes and Avery start the year back at Bowie.

You appear to be assuming that Angle doesn't clear waivers. I wouldn't assume that.

If he clears waivers, isn't he off the 40 man? I thought that was the point of DFA'ing him.

My guess is that he won't since Hudson did not and I think most folks would value Angle higher than Hudson. Then again, it surprised me a little that Hudson was claimed. I'm certainly hoping he's not claimed and that you are right. Just thinking about "what if" in the event that he is claimed.

Hudson wasn't claimed. He became a free agent because the O's had to release him for some technical reason. He signed with the Rangers as a free agent, but he is not on their 40-man roster. Angle, on the other hand, would have to be put on the claiming team's 40-man roster, or he stays in our organization.

Right you are (that still seemed like a strange and infrequently used transaction with Hudson, the "draft-eligible waivers"). Let's hope Angle passes through waivers and then we have an acceptable backup if the need arises.

Not having anyone on the 40-man wouldn't mean they couldn't bring someone up, they just would have to make a corresponding move.

And they do have a few guys who could play for a game or two if needed. Andino, Antonelli and Mahoney have played some games out there (though only Andino has done it in the majors).

Basically, your 5th OF is Andino if Miller doesn't make the team. I think Buck has said as much in the past.

Hopefully Angle will be playing CF at Norfolk. Meaning hopefully Angle clears waivers.

I would think that the goal there was to make Andino more of a super sub, especially if Antonelli can play second or Roberts is actually healthy.

Has Angle been claimed? Thought we would know by now.

Great question. It's been more than 10 days and I have seen nothing. I'm hoping he passed through waivers and is absorbed back into the organization, but no news yet. Hopefully, we'll hear something today.

Even if Miller didn't make the cut and had to pass waivers, couldn't he theoretically be signed to a minor league deal and kept around? Knowing the traditional turnover in this organization throughout the year, he might make the decision to sign with Norfolk and hope for a mid-season call-up than try to stick somewhere else.

We lost Angle to the Dodgers today. Kind of sad to see him go for nothing. I was hoping he would pass through and be placed in Norfolk.
