NFL Network's Jason LaCanfora reports the Ravens will begin long-term extension discussions with the player rep for Joe Flacco at next week's Combine.
Locking up Flacco is a no-brainer, but it was apparently his impressive AFC Championship game performance at New England that sold the front office on a new deal entering a contract season. Hamstrung by an unimaginative scheme and receivers who struggle to gain separation, Flacco's numbers actually took a step back in 2011. On a positive note, Flacco is the only quarterback since the 1970 merger to start a playoff game in each of his first four seasons. If Ryan Fitzpatrick landed $24 million guaranteed, Flacco should top $30 million easily.

Something to keep in mind when these things start moving is that Joe's agent hasn't had a franchise QB. They are aware of that and there's pressure on Joe's family to sign with someone else
like a Tom Condon. There's been some missteps along the way with his agents.
I actually think this is a pretty easy deal to get done. We can all throw darts at a number here and we'll all probably be close.
When will the NFL release what the cap number is going up to? That's going to be a big factor for us this offseason, as we have some key cogs that we need to get locked up long term.
Flacco's guaranteed money should be somewhere between Kolb and Fitzpatrick, and Roethlesberger.
That's going to be the tricky part for both parties. If they tried to push off some bonus money to next year, there's really no advantage for Flacco to take it unless its more than he would make with the franchise tag for next year. If he's not given a large signing bonus for this year, then Flacco should just force the Ravens to franchise him next year and pick up another 15MM on top of his likely bonus with a new contract.
From the Ravens standpoint, you don't want to negotiate a new contract in a year when the salary cap goes up substantially. It would artificially inflate Flacco's value. There's also plenty of room for the Ravens to get a deal done with Flacco this and they'll just need to bite the bullet and get it done. It's better to overpay him this year then to try and strike a market value deal for him next season.
Has all the rumble of his disconnect gone away? Do we know for sure that Joe wants to stay?
The agent for Joe Flacco is targeting top-five quarterback money in long-term extension talks with the Ravens.
Flacco isn't a top-five quarterback and probably isn't even top-ten, so this could drag things out for Baltimore. "If the game is about wins and losses, he has to be in the top five," said agent Joe Linta. "... And he’s done something that no one has ever done. In his four years in the league, he has never missed a game and has more wins than any other quarterback."

He might be the best QB in the league for all I know, but until the shackles come off, who knows. I don't subscribe to the "wins" argument either. His agent does realize that this is a team sport, right? If the team wins, it isn't because of Joe. It might be because the D dominated for 8 games during the season.. I agree he should get more than Fitz and Kolb, but if he think he is getting Top 5 money, then he won't be signing here with us
