I thought it would be interesting to see what people come up with on this one. You guys are a creative bunch... But after 14 years it shouldn't be that hard to come up with some good stuff! Have at it...
Crickets.
He didn't change the name to the Baltimore Ballerinas. Or worse yet, Wizards.
I can't think of anything.
I really can't think of anything either...
Sign Palmeiro?
Well, he hasn't moved the team to Indianapolis. So he's got that going for him, which is nice.
Hired Robert Andino.
Oh wait,
That was Andy MacPhail
Charitable giving to the community
He has done NOTHING of signifigance with the Orioles
You could say that his purchase was the final shovel of dirt on the notion that the franchise would be moved to D.C., though building Camden Yards really was the end of that nonsense. After that ... ?
You have to look back at the history of team when it was open to be bought. There was real talk of the team moving out of Baltimore, and Angelos committed to keeping the team here. He was a savior for awhile, especially thorough the 96 and 97 years...until the shine came off. Committing to keeping the team downtown was the best thing he has done...No matter what happens in the future now that Camden Yards is built, I don't think the team is going anywhere.
I have no problem saying that when I was 28 years old and we signed Albert Belle - who had 200 hits and 49 homeruns the year before, I was very excited. I will also look back on watching Roberto Alomar, Harold Baines, and Miguel Tejada with a degree of fondness. He was paying the bills for all those guys. Yes, I loved watching gimpy Harold Baines still be able to single to center seemingly at will. If we would've signed Vlad that same offseason we signed Tejada, I'd have been on cloud nine at the time. I'm 41 now, and a lot of things have happened, both during that time period and since, that have made me develop animosity towards Angelos and to see running an organization from a different perspective than I had in my 20's.
Just a side note. We had an event at our school to raise money for heart disease this week. The Washington Capitals, The Ravens, and the Orioles all sent mascots. Our school paid them all for their hour. The Philadelphia Eagles sent their mascot at no charge. Not a big deal at all. The Eagles deserve some extra credit, though.![]()
