Depends on how well he can run the bases. You need to be able to use him as a PR if he's on your bench. It also depends on his defense. Assuming, for example, you put him at 2B and move Andino to 3B in the late innings for Reynolds, you need Roberts to be significantly better at 2B than Reynolds is at 3B to make up for the positional significance of 2B vs 3B.

I think you have to assume that Brian Roberts is always going to be a better baserunner than the guys you'd want to pinch run for. Roberts at the age of 55 will probably be faster and better on the bases than Matt Wieters is at 25.

If Roberts ends up as a bench player it'll be out of necessity, not because that's some optimal solution. It'll be because he's healthy enough to play, but not good enough to start. Given that Andino is the starter, that won't be a good thing for the O's.

I also think it's hard to see a situation where he'd be healthy enough for part-time bench duty but not starting.

I don't have any problem with speculating as to how much Brian might play or what role he might fill. I was just taking issue with the statement that "there's NO WAY he plays 140 games," though I do expect it is quite unlikely that he will.

Maybe, but it doesn't say he'll do all the workouts that everyone else is doing, just that he'll be on the field. Pullin' for him...

I don’t think there will be a career if it’s something I’m dealing with..I’m obviously not going to continue to mess around with this if it continues to be a problem. There comes a point where you can only torture yourself for so long.

Only played catch with Hardy and then back inside to hit off the tee. No fielding drills. Not feeling real great about his chances, especially after reading the Morneau thing.

I think the chances that he is on the OD roster are slim. But I haven't ruled out that he will return a month or two into the season. He seems to be making progress, so it's a matter of whether he has any relapse as he steps things up. I'm sure he is being extremely careful. I guess we'll know more when he addresses the media later today.

On a side note, I wonder how Nick Markakis is doing? I think he's been in camp for about a week and we haven't heard a thing from him.
