InterestingWith March 1 deadline looming, expectation within baseball continues to be 10-team playoff format will happen this year. Ironing out details
Good...That's how it should be.
I consider myself more of a traditionalist, but I like this idea. Anything that makes more September games meaningful is a good plan for me.
It is what was being discussed earlier and it is the only way I would approve of the change.
1-Playoffs are going to late into the calender year as it is, even a 3 game series will take 5 days.
2-Can you imagine divisional winners having to sit while an entire best of 3 or 5 series is played out?
2-Under the current system the WC team can be rewarded over a divisional winner, this will eliminate that and make it a do or die game for the teams in the WC. The divisional winners will also get more rest.
To the contrary, it's great. It makes it hugely important to try to win your division, rather than settling for a wild card berth where it could be one game and done. Winning the division actually means something other than one extra home game. Plus, it doesn't significantly drag out the playoffs, which already take long enough, thanks. And, those one-game playoffs will be super-tense games.
So, the 2 WC teams would play the 1 and done and the team that wins will play the #1 seed I assume?
That also means that if Boston, NY and TB make up 3 of the spots and Boston is the #1 seed, that NY and TB can play Boston in round 1? Is that true?
I can feel Drungo getting a headache from here.
Besides last year, at a quick glance, there seems to be a significant drop-off between the 4th and 5th place team in the AL over the past few years.
The only thing I don't like about the "one and done" playoff is this...you could have your traditional wildcard team, aka seed #4 this year, with a 90+ win season, losing to the #5 seed who may have just barely squeaked in with a 80 some win season. It will be as bad as the Giants with their 9-7 regular season winning the SuperBowl. I don't like that.
Plus, our luck, we'll pull a miracle this year, get the #4 seed, but lose the "one and done" game, only to go on and lose another 14 straight years!
OK, fine, add another wildcard team... But please PLEASE make it stop there!
