Berken: more than a "tweak"
http://www.masnsports.com/school_of_...en-absent.htmlReliever Jason Berken isn't participating in today's workout. Manager Buck Showalter indicated that Berken's hamstring injury is a little more serious now than a "tweak" and he's no longer day-to-day. Berken will be sidelined indefinitely.
See, that's the stuff I don't want to read. I'd rather read 100 reports about how well the ball is coming out of somebody's hand.

Hate to see guys get hurt, but I have to believe that he had an uphill climb to make the roster.

Much better it be a hamstring than an elbow or shoulder.

Was Berken in line to make the bullpen roster? I don't think he was...not trying to say this is irrelevant but at least it's not happening to a guy we were counting on to make the team out of ST.
You also have to wonder about Berken's ability to stay healthy. He hasn't been able to do that throughout his career.

Bullpen could have very limited spots depending if Wada makes the rotation.
CL - Johnson
SU - Goggles
MR - Patton
MR - O'Day
MR - Strop
MR - Lindstrom
LR / MR - Wada
LR / MR - Tillman**
Last spot could be between Berken, Tillman, Bergy, and Simon.

Berken will be competing for one of the long-reliever slots along with a bunch of other wannabe starters. My guess is he's in about the middle of that pack.

At least it happened very early on. He should have time to heal and get back into it.

Berken's not likely to make this squad anyway.

With options, Berken had a very slim chance of making the O's roster. His one shot was to be absolutely blowing away hitters and being this years Jake Fox.

This is fine. He will start the season the DL, do a rehab and be ready to by the time one of the other bullpen arms is injured. I like Berken and for awhile there he was a very good reliever. If I were to pick 6 or 7 current pitchers that had the capability to be a part of a shutdown bullpen, Berken would be in there.

Heh, classic. We'll see what happens with the healing process. There's not much else to say.
