Michael Ohlman (C) may have significant shoulder damage from car accident
From Britt:
http://brittghiroli.mlblogs.com/2012...ame-tidbits-3/Orioles catcher Michael Ohlman had an MRI on his right shoulder yesterday ?which was injured in a car accident? and the test revealed significant damage. Ohlman will get a second opinion from team orthopedist Dr. Wilckens today, and the two options right now are surgery or rehab. He will not be with the team for the rest of camp.
Saw this on the Rotoworld scroller on the front page but not sure if it's been posted on the board.
Michael hasn't shown much with the bat yet, but he's still young, 21 this year.

What a shame. On the other hand, he could have been killed. If the worst that happens is that he needs shoulder surgery, that's still better than what it could have been.

THank goodness he IS alive. His truck rolled over three times but he had his seat belt on. He was in uniform today in the Orioles dugout and he looked like he was able to move OK.

If his shoulder is damaged enough to possibly need surgery than it's not a stretch to think this was more than a small fender bender. In the big picture a shoulder injury isn't all that bad.
Edit: Just saw Doc's post. That was way more than a small fender bender. The shoulder injury seems even less significant now.

Michael Ohlman is very concerned about what is best for the Orioles. He was raised to be a very loyal guy. His whole family is that way. He wants to mke the best decision for the benefit of the team based on what the doctors explain are his options. Unfortuanately, choosing the best option is not always a clear choice as their are many variables and unknowns in predicting medical outcomes. Whatever the specialists advise, you can count on Michael to make the best decision for the Orioles, ahead of his own concerns. There is an sad story posted on the Faceebook page by one of his family members about why Michael is sure to wear his seatbelt. He wears a couple of "bracelets" to remind him of friends losts who did not wear their seatbelts.
To calrify what I said in my earlier post, Michael was in the dugout before the game Thursday. We spoke about his accident and how "luckcy" he was to be alaive after going airborne over the car that cut him off and jammed their brakes without seeing Michael. His car did 3.5 rotations to land on its roof. He had his BP jersey on while he was in the dugout and he was moving about OK. However, he does have a serious shoulder injury that may or may not requqire surgery depending on the best advice the specialists can provide. Predicting the best course of action is not always a clear-cut, black or white path. Few can predict the future well. While we await Michael's medical option choices, let celebrate that he is alive and otherwise well. The accident was an unfortuanate happening - not of his fault -- but all parties are alive.Last edited by DrShorebird; 03-09-2012 at 09:03 AM.

Thanks for all the background Doc. This along with the pictures that Oneoftheguys posted show how lucky he is to "just" have a shoulder injury. These kinds of things put prospect status and all that stuff into perspective. I'm just glad the young man is alive and well despite the shoulder injury. He's got a great family so I'm sure he will make the right decision and get himself healed up and hopefully back on the diamond where he can continue to chase his dream.

It didn't help matters that the CG of his pickup was about 5' off the ground.

I had read the initial report and it didn't seem like a big deal; I just now saw this. Good God. Glad he is relatively okay, and best of luck to him in all aspects going forward.

Thanks Tony. Because of some confusion with another player's incident, I will add some facts. Michael lives nearby here. He was on his way home from practice. The details of accident are: It happened about 2:00 Tuesday afternoon. A lady in a little BMW Z-3 roadster convertible cut him off (she said she didn’t see him) and it was right at an intersection – the light turned yellow and she slammed on the brakes… so, not only did she come over almost clipping his front bumper, she then locks up the brakes… well, I guess it looked like a stunt out of the Dukes of Hazard, because his truck slammed into the back of their car and basically used it as a ramp launching his truck into the air and started flipping… He said it was so high in the air that it started to “summersault” - he said he could feel the front left corner start to dip as well… The good news is that as it somersaulted and flipped, it expended/dissipated all of the energy over that area, as opposed to a sudden stop, which would have likely caused significant trauma. Everyone is lucky that the 2 women were not decapitated also. The bystanders were prepared to go pull a body out of the truck and were amazed when he actually crawled out of the truck and walked away. His shoes actually flew off of his feet while the truck was flipping. No one else was in the truck (as oppossed to the other player incident) which occurred at night.
