After the 2nd round of the O's starter competition
Chen, Simon and Hammel have had two good appearances getting to 3 innings in their last outings. They have been consistent.
Matusz, Arrieta, Tillman and Bergy have had very good starts and not so good starts.
Hunter is stretching out in B games. Sounds like he will probably be in his next round.
Britton is up to an inning in a B game and Wada is getting closer to being in games as they recover from injuries.
Galarraga and Eveland should probably be out of the starter competitionLast edited by wildcard; 03-14-2012 at 08:38 PM.

You left out Tillman who is in the conversation at least. His last outing got a thread started about him. "Chris Tillman draws rave reviews", maybe you saw that.
And Simon, while he has been consistent, I don't think is being considered as a serious candidate for the rotation.Last edited by socalbirdfan; 03-14-2012 at 04:24 PM.

Consistency can't be measured after two short appearances IMO, let it play out

I think this next round will be very important, because as the starters stretch out, the innings available become scarce. Let's say Matusz (the only pitcher to throw 4 innings so far) is able to get through 5 IP tomorrow and pitches well. (Note -- I am not sure they will let him go 5, even if the pitch count is low, because they still want to see other people.) Well, at that point, he'd have to be considered a real front runner for a spot. To the same point, the guys who can't manage to get through 4 IP in their 3rd start of the spring start to be in jeopardy.
It's certainly been interesting so far, and it will get more interesting over the next several days.

He didn't say that being consistent over two starts had any meaning whatsoever. Or that consistency itself was valuable. Or that you can read much of anything into six innings of spring work. Only that those pitchers pitched similarly in consecutive appearances.
I hope that was his meaning, because inferring anything else from two early spring starts is kind of ridiculous.
