The Chicago Bears have consistently found a way to replace their best special teams players under Dave Toub.
They will have to do it again now.
Corey Graham, who represented the Bears in the Pro Bowl this past season as a special teams player, is moving on. He told the Tribune he will sign with the Baltimore Ravens on Friday, a day after he made a free-agent visit to the Detroit Lions. Graham has been Toub's most consistent player for the past three seasons and with 75 special teams tackles since 2007, he ranks third in the NFL.
But Graham sought a chance to contribute more on defense and the Ravens will offer that. Baltimore also lost two of its best special teams players in former Bears Pro Bowler Brendon Ayanbadejo and safety Haruki Nakamura. Ayanbadejo, a linebacker, is a free agent. Nakamura, a safety, signed with the Carolina Panthers.
"I believe it's a better situation for me and a better opportunity with a fresh start," Graham told the Tribune. "I gave the Bears every opportunity but they moved on. All around, Baltimore is just a better deal for me and my family."
Graham, who also made a free-agent visit to the Seattle Seahawks, played three games at nickel cornerback last season. With D.J. Moore sidelined with a sprained ankle, Graham made three interceptions in three consecutive games. He played only 87 snaps on defense but had gotten just two the year before in 2010. Graham's 412 snaps on special teams this past season easily led the Bears.
Phil Emery has already helped stock Toub's units. The Bears signed linebacker Blake Costanzo and wide receiver Eric Weems early in free agency. They are core special teams players and Weems was a Pro Bowl selection in 2010. The hope is he can provide much of what Graham did the past several seasons.

Getting Graham is a solid addition who upgrades the ST's and prolly takes either Haruki or Zibby's roles in nickel/dime packages, I just read we resigned Ayanbadejo to a 3 year deal guess were not getting this other special teamer Ekejiuba . Ayanbadejo is a solid back-up LB and awsome ST player but he's starting to get old, hopefully we got him on the cheap.

I like the fact that they have put a priority on ST. It was definitely an issue last year because, surprisingly, Cundiff wasn't the man on kickoffs he was the year before.

The emphasis on retaining/acquiring good specials teams players is a move in the right direction. Our special teams haven't been that special in recent seasons.

Wonder why he thinks he'll get more time on defense with the Ravens? Assuming Webb is resigned, he's no better than 4th corner here as well.

I kind of view him as a replacement for Chris Carr, so I'd bet that is what they sold him on. Plus, with the ever possible Reed retirement and Pollard being in the last year of his contract, they could have also sold him on the fact that he could be a safety, or at least a backup as a safety
