Why the late start to the season?

Traditionally, Opening Day was on the same Monday as the NCAA Title game. I have fond memories of attending OD and following that up with watching the NCAA game that same night.

Last year, however, the start of the season was pushed back in an effort by Selig to ensure that the season would end a tad earlier.

This year, the Opening Day for most teams is this Thursday or even this Friday which is LATER than when the season used to start? What gives? Especially when you consider they are adding an extra playoff game in each league it would seem that the season will be ending even later than normal. This obviously isn't a huge deal by any means but since today is Championship Monday I sure could use some baseball that matters. I don't wanna wait 4 more days!!!

I've been wondering that, too. Last year on this date, the season had already begun. What gives, Selig?

Also, Friday is exactly the 20th anniversary of the first game at Camden Yards. So there is that.

I think they like the idea of starting the season on a Friday so that people can get out to Games 2 and 3 over the weekend. Remember how poor attendance for those games used to be?

I really wonder if this was MLB's plan. Opening days are always huge, but game two and three are usually let downs in most cities. Putting them on a weekend probably helps attendance out a good bit. Either way, this does seem late, especially with those ridiculous Japanese games counting. What a debacle that was.

With Bud, it is about the money. So I am sure you are both right. What was I thinking!

They did the same thing last year. Remember that Friday night game in Tampa? Probably Guthrie's best start of the season.

Yes, but last year's Friday start was the weekend BEFORE this season's. The season started in March last year IIRC.

Well, if it is, it worked - I just bought tickets to Saturday's game!

    Eh, I kinda like it.

    I ordered WrestleMania last night.
I'll be watching Raw and the NCAA Finals tonight.
Tuesday the family will watch a baseball movie together.
Wednesday i took off to golf with my brother and cousin, softball in the evening, Cards vs Miami Opening Night after that.
Thursday i took off to watch the Masters and the Opening Day games all day.
Friday I took off to attend Opening Day.
Saturday and Sunday baseball, Masters, and Easter.

Looking like a pretty fantastic week!
