I disagree. The over use of our bullpen has been an ongoing problem. If our starter has given up 7 runs in the 4th inning and has a pitch count of 80, why not leave him out there to throw 110 pitches? I'd rather lose 10-2 and use one less reliever, than lose 7-2 and burn and arm or two saving those 3 meaningless runs.

Bump -- Alfredo Simon has done a nice job for the Reds, pitching to a 2.43 ERA in a long/middle relief role. He has pitched 2+ innings 12 times, including 4 outings longer than 2 innings. That would have fit our needs pretty nicely. I have to say, I would not have expected a 2.43 ERA from him.

I was surprised when we let him go. I really liked Simon. Glad he is doing well.

I've still no sense of loss in letting Simon go. He's a dime a dozen reliever that drove people batty because too often he couldn't find the plate, and those issues don't tend to go away for most players. We already have at least one of those guys, the only difference is we paid him millions of dollars to drive us crazy.

Good for Simon, but I still think he gets shelled in the AL.

BTW, his WHIP is 1.402, and his BB/9 rate is 3.5. I think it's highly likely those numbers would be worse if he were still here, and before yesterday's game, his WHIP wasn't that much better than everyone's favorite punching bag Kevin Gregg. Again, Kevin Gregg sucks, and it sucks having to pay him the money were are, but lets not make it sound like some slam dunk case that Simon is, or would do better if he were still here. If he were better, or Buck/Dan had reason to believe as such, he never would have been let go.

I think dumping Simon was defensible given the other members of the staff when he was let go. Especially since we're fairly sure Angelos wouldn't sign off on releasing Gregg.
While Simon's ERA is surprising for the Reds, I'm still surprised by the performances of 3/4ths of the Orioles pen. It's not like they released Simon, and otherwise he'd be the best reliever on the team (as would be the case in many recent years).
