Dwayne Wade says NBA players should be paid for playing in the Olympics
http://espn.go.com/nba/truehoop/miam...ns-compensated
I don't anticipate him getting much support for this idea.

I wish we'd put actual amateurs into the Olympics. Might do wonders for college basketball.

It was fun to see NBA players in the Olympics. I agree with sammy, we should go back to amateurs at this point.

I'd rather put college athletes in there and pay them.

Right because playing in the Olympics doesn't do anything to increase your brand/publicity/appeal for potential sponsors right? I simply disagree that long term play in the Olympics can't pay off for athletes.
There certainly is an argument to be made that Olympic or NCAA players don't get their value back from what they offer their schools or countries. Doing so haphazardly like Wade did, doesn't seem all that smart though.

Wade doesn't strike me as being stupid. I would think that someone with an estimated net worth of 65 Million who is getting paid in excess of 14 million per season before endorsements, would realize that no good could come out of making a statement of this sort.
It is just a matter of how big the backlash is going to be from the fans.

Well if NBA fans cared about that kind of stuff it would matter. But all the fans that are left are the ones that don't seem to mind that they all seemingly play for self interest and money above all else.
I do at times feel bad for these guys being constantly peppered with questions. I mean what was the lead in question there? The answer seems pretty pointed...I say stupid stuff all the time without being constantly prompted to answer questions. So I'm not necessarily blaming him, but the comments in retrospect do seem out of touch.

I like Dwayne Wade, but he comes off looking like a complete mercenary here. Most other Olympic athletes are making peanuts compared to what NBA players make. If he wants to take the summer off, fine, he doesn't need to play in the Olympics. We can find 12 other good players who think that playing for their country is a privilege.

Yeah, it's a dumb thing to say.
As far as the novelty thing, I don't see that at all as this isn't really a novelty, it's doing what needs to be done to win, and they accomplished that last Olympics in a very entertaining fashion. It's also fun to see the competition for roster spots now that so many guys want to play on the team.
