He seems to botch a lot of routine plays. He dropped a couple of throws in Spring Training like the one he dropped tonight. I'm not too impressed with his defense.

I am afraid he is a classic AAAA player.

I know I'll get beat up on this, but Reynolds makes both those plays at first.

Well count me as a big fan of Chris Davis. I think he is an excellent athlete for a big guy and his stroke is a thing of beauty. Can we please just let this guy have a fair shake and an adequate opportunity to show us how good he can be? To me he is the first legit first base prospect we have had in a long, long time.

I completely agree with giving him an opportunity to prove himself. On a bit of an anside, does it bother anyone else that a first baseman doesn't get an error on a throw that should be obviously picked? The error that went to Betemit, while obviously a bad throw, should have been easily picked by Davis. Just a pet peeve of mine.

Being a former 1B, I am not sure that is a play he should have 'obviously' picked. It appeared to me the throw hit right around the 'dirt/grass line' near 1B. It's almost on pure luck to get that pick, because it is two totally different hops depending on if it hits the dirt or grass, and you have virtually no time to react.

Good points. I played 3rd in college and maybe I'm just jealous that 1st baseman got the glory with a pic but never the error!

I play third and agree 110% that yea ok I should've hit you in the chest but that was a very pickable ball!! Help me out one time! Happens all the time with my first baseman.

Not sold at all on Davis. That opposite field HR tonight was a thing of beauty though.

I agree. He made tougher ones for Hardy. Sometimes that easier in betweeny thing is bit tougher though. Gives you more time to think instead of just reacting.

There is a certain range that's out far enough you'd think it's easy to play, but being worried if it's going to take a high bounce or skip and stay low kinda freezes you in place. Anytime you see a ball hit that spot you cringe a little.

Well, Davis has passed his first test and has now earned the right to be given an extended trial. We shall see if he's the Orioles starter for the next 10 years or another failed prospect.
