I'm pretty impressed with his changeup but we'll see. Some of the breaking balls were a little bit ugly.

    I could see him as a 3/4.

I like his change up too, but imo Matusz has the best change on the team when he is throwing it well.

Thanks. I keep doing that. I don't know why. I didn't do it last year. Maybe I have some kind of Steve Blass/Steve Sax/Mackey Sasser thing going on.

I have trouble remembering how good it was in 2010.

Definitely his swing-and-miss pitch. I was working and watching, so have an incomplete take. I definitely saw some poor ones late.

When you get good starting pitching, it enables you to hang in there and beat a guy like Danks, who was cruising for awhile. If our starter coughs up 3 or 4 runs by the 5th inning, it's so much harder to come back against someone like Danks.

Yeah he was a little out of sorts late.

I think they got too cute with the breaking stuff in the 6th.

Chen was solid for 5 but 5 isn't enough. Very disappointing that he gets a 3-0 lead and can't finish the next half inning.

He still looks better than Matusz at this point, and considering the adjustments he has to make, I'm more willing to cut him the slack, before I pass judment on him.

I was at the game tonight and had a good look at Chen from behind the plate. Wasn't blown away by the fastball, topping out at 91 once according to the stadium gun, but it sure looks quick next to a changeup at 70. Boy was it fun to see the Sox get way out in front a couple times.

He definitely had some command issues with the breaking ball - I feel like almost a half dozen bounced in the dirt.

By the way, was Palmer doing the broadcast tonight and did he complain about the umps again? I remember a few calls (first base ump calling a swing on a third strike, and one awful called strike for a backwards K) that got some reactions from the O's hitters. My friends and I were laughing looking back at the press box, wondering if Palmer was flipping out again. Nothing game-changing, but still some bad calls.

I am willing to dismiss some of the command issues on the secondaries to the weather. I think we got a bargain in this signing.

    Per britt:

@Britt_Ghiroli: Chen came out of the bathroom after his first Major League win & Ayala got him w. shaving cream, Hunter followed w. a Blue Gatorade shower.
