White Sox T.V. Announcers
So I'm in South Bend for 4 days, and I'm listening to the game today on CSN.
First thing, their announcers (Hawk and Steve) are terribly boring (as were their radio announcers last night.)
On Adam Jones' homerun, they didn't call it until it landed in the stands.
The rest of the time before it landed, was dead air. It seems like 25% of their broadcast has been dead air.
Second, they are spending a ton of time talking about the O's.
Very complimentary stuff, not he most knowledgeable, but nice.
I think it was Steve who said he would love to see Cal purchase the team, and Hawk said it might take him a while with the RSN attached.
Now they are talking about Jones again and they think he is going to have a "monster year."
They also said they thought it was a mistake to not lock him up this off-season.Last edited by incubus; 04-19-2012 at 11:21 PM. Reason: Spelling correction

Hawk is a massive homer. Worse than Dibble was with the Nats.
"He gone."
Nice to hear they weren't ragging on the O's too much, usually it seems like they belittle other teams from what I hear.

The few times I've had the misfortune of listening to Hawk he's filled up every moment referring to the good guys by their first name and openly rooting for them to take down the enemy. Worst. Announcer. Ever.It seems like 25% of their broadcast has been dead air.

"He gone" cut through the fog of my multitasking consciousness to make me realize I had the wrong broadcast selected on MLBTV. I was like, what is that incredibly annoying sound?

During the first game when they were up 4-1 and they believe they were cruising to a W late in the game..
Weiters came up and crushed one to right, the broadcasted said: "Well the O's are showing a little bit of power" in a mocking way.

Was following that one on Gameday, they always give you a live look-in with two outs in the ninth. Tuned in just a second too late to see Jones' HR, but did get to hear Hawk despondently imploring the White Sox pitcher to "come on, get this next guy and we can go to extras." Made me smile almost as much as the HR.

Not sure if this was noted previously on this board, but at the end of the Yankees series, Michael Kay on YES said that with four good teams in the East, the difference may be which team can rough up on the Orioles the most. Granted, it was at the end of a 3-game sweep, but still showed how they view the Birds (not very well).

Been watching on MLB.com all week. Those commentators are so lame. When JJ just fanned that last batter to seal it, I yelled HE GONE loud enough for them to hear it in Chicago. That has got to be the most lame and annoying catch phrase in all of sports.

Fangraphs rated them the worst announcing team in the majors. When the White Sox are losing, Hawk gets pretty sullen and doesn't talk much (hence, the dead air).
It's a pretty tough listen, but it can be pretty funny sometimes. There was a soundbite a few years ago when the White Sox were playing in Toronto. It was early in the game and a White Sox player hit a home run. On the Blue Jays telecast, the announcers were modestly announcing the home run, but in the background you could hear the "YESSSSS" from Hawk's call through the wall. It's pretty funny to hear.Last edited by VeveJones007; 04-19-2012 at 05:40 PM.

I have a friend who's a White Sox fan, and he loves Harrelson. Loves. Him.
I can't understand it myself. But maybe if Jim Hunter just dialed it up from 'unabashed homer' to 'buffoon' we'd feel the same way about him.

The catch phrases are annoying and it's definitely "we" against "them" but they do acknowledge good pitching and good plays by the other team. I've heard worse.
