Check out this tweet from Buster Olney
@Buster_ESPN: Last year, the Tigers played 51 games against teams of .500 or better. The Orioles played 103. More on this in column Tuesday.

Not sure what the surprise is. Yes, we play in a significantly better division than the Tigers do.
I'd love to see how we'd do in another division. I'm not lobbying for it as I hope someday we can hang with everyone else...but I really am curious what we'd be like if we played in the AL Central or something.

Keep in mind the main reason why the Jays were at 500 was that they went 12-6 against the O's. 85 sounds a lot less daunting then 103.

The Jays were 12 games under .500 vs the rest of the division though. Who knows how many games they would win playing the AL Central teams 18 times a year.
We all know how hard this division is, and so do the players, not to defend this franchise too much but it makes it real hard to attract free agents. If Detroit and Toronto played in different divisions where would Fielder be right now and would Detroit operate their team in the same manner they do now? they are the mini Yankees in that division. Maybe Toronto would have made a strong play for Fielder, hard to say.

Fielder would be in Detroit because I don't think any other team was anywhere near the contract that Detroit gave him. Detroit's owner is old and not in the best of health, he isn't concerned about what that contract looks like in 7 years.
Of course the ultimate response to anyone trying to blame the division is "The Rays did it, why can't the O's with twice the payroll?"

The Tigers were 61-55 on August 10th last year, up 2 games. The rest of the way they went 34-12, beating up on the weak AL Central. They went 10-0 vs Cleveland the rest of the way, 6-3 vs Minnesota and 6-0 vs the White Sox. Those 3 teams were very poor at the end of the year.

You are right, if the Rays can do it so can anyone else. I think what Tampa has done is the best accomplishment by any franchise in pro sports in a long time.
I am not so sure that Prince would go to Detroit because maybe they wouldn't be in the same position. I bring up the issue because of the constant complaining about the Orioles payroll from some people. Are the Orioles really in any position to bring in free agents because of the division? Once again not taking away blame from their ineptitude.

Do I think dropping the divisions and playing a balanced schedule is the only fair way to determine the best five teams in each League?
-Yes
Do I think a balanced schedule would make a significant difference on where the O's finish every year?
-No

Three 10 team divisions. East, Central, and West.
You play 150 games total. Two 5 game series against each team in your division. A 3 game series against every team outside of your division. 3 Division winners and 1 wild card compete for the World Series.
Opening Day is April 1st. Game 1 of the World Series is October 1st. Standardize or trash the DH. Put in a salary cap and floor. Penalize pitchers who take too long on the mound.
Boom. Done. Everything is solved. Not that it will ever happen ($).

I was surprised to hear that the difference between the Orioles' schedule and the Tigers' was that extreme. However, I believe the Orioles would have been a sub-.500 team no matter what division they played in. The O's were 22-20 against the AL Central, 12-18 against the AL West, 7-11 in intraleague play. They would still be playing 30-42 games against the AL East (depending on the year). So, maybe they'd have been a 75-76 win team instead of a 69-win team if they played in the AL Central last year. Still not very good.
