Any word on how the rotation will be reshuffled this week?
I understand that the O's plan to pitch Arrieta this Thursday to keep him on regular 4 days' rest. Has there been any word on whether Matusz will pitch in the Oakland series this weekend? Or will they, in effect skip his turn and not pitch him until we play the Yankees in New York on April 30? Personally, I think it makes sense for him to pitch against Oakland to try to build a little confidence against a weak-hitting lineup (.601 OPS overall, .590 vs. LHP).

I think they will pitch him against Oakland, unless they want to give Chen an extra day.

Pretty strange question. There are only 5 starters on the 25 man roster and the O's play 5 games in a row. How could they wait to pitch Matusz against the Yankees? Are you suggesting that they are going to promote another starter?

Why is Buck so adamant about keeping Jake on normal rest?

Hmmm, I guess you have a point there.....somehow I got confused.
Anyway, I think the real reason Buck isn't pitching Matusz in the Toronto series is that he'd rather get Matusz a chance to pitch against a poor-hitting team to try to give him some confidence and get him on track. I don't think it has anything to do with keeping Arrieta on 4 days' rest.

The control thing would make sense; most pitchers do better on 4 days rest control-wise. I think Buck even said Chen looked crisper on 4 days rest last time out.
I think part of it may also be that Buck thinks Arrieta is our best pitcher by a pretty good margin and just wants to let him pitch as many games as possible. Depending how bad Hunters side is (he claims its not bad, but his control has been lacking of late), maybe they could find a way to skip Hunter's next start, which would keep the other guys on normal rest and give tommy time to heal properly.

The off day gave the entire rotation an extra day, which could be used to keep everyone on 5 days rest or skip one guy all together. Keeping Arrieta on 4 days rest means someone will either get skipped or start on 6 days rest, so i think you were right the first time.
He may want to keep arrieta on 4 days rest for a couple of reasons, but id agree that letting matusz start against oakland would be helpful to his confidence. His previous starts have come against good offensive teams, and the jays hit him pretty good the last time around. my concern would just be that matusz' control would be even shakier after 6 days off the mound.

So the rest of the week is:
TOR: Hammel
TOR: Arrietta
OAK: Matusz
OAK: Chen
OAK: Hunter
looks like 4-1 to me.

I could have sworn last night on the broadcast that they said Matusz was starting on Thursday night, but I could be wrong.
