Good move IMO. We really don't need the extra bat for the short time Andino will be out.

I don't disagree, I was simply trying to respond to another posters question about how it works when you reassign a player to the minors and later want to bring him back up. I agree that in a perfect world, trading Berken for Gregg in the pen would be a positive move for the O's. In the real world, the O's are paying Gregg a lot of money and want to get some value out of that. I'm sure at some point, Duquette will decide that we've reach the point where there is no further value to be gained. After all, Gregg isn't a DD acquisition and it's no pain for him to go to ownership and say Andy made a big mistake, "oh, well," and cut him loose. Not sure if 17 games into the season is enough for him to say that they made a real effort.

With JJ sick we're down to 6 RP. If you consider Gregg, that makes it more like 5.1 RP. Of course bring up Berken. We don't need the extra bat. I have often thought that one way to get more parity, would be to allow roster size to increase in proportion to the previous season's W/L record. So the O's could have 28 men and the Stros could have 30........

If it were just the 17 games into this season, I would agree. But 1 year and 17 games is plenty to send him on his way. Last year alone would have been plenty. His last 2 outings have made it abundantly clear what needs to be done, and what probably should have already been done.

Hey, if it worked in the embryonic majors of the 1880s, why not today? Almost everyone played multiple positions back then. Guy Hecker won a batting title in a year where he pitched 420 innings and played 39 games at 1B/OF. Buck Ewing is in the Hall as a catcher, but he played 30+ games at every position but pitcher. That's what you had to do when you literally only had 3-4 substitutes including pitchers, and there was no such thing as a minor league affiliate.
I hate short benches, I'm from the Earl Weaver school, but it might be kind of cool if there are so many pitchers on the roster that your last couple of relievers have to play the field sometimes.

That's pretty unlikely, but I suppose they could put Chavez in center and Flaherty in left for the remainder of the game. Put Betemit at 2nd and Reynolds at 3rd. Have Johnson DH. Call Jai Miller up for the next 15 days. We'll have a spot on the 40 open once Wada goes on the 60 day DL.

Berken will be great to have around if Matusz craps the bed again and needs to be taken out in the fourth inning.
