This is what I'm most curious about. If this is a different guy than what COL had, it's going to be fun to watch.

If Chen and Hammel can hold this together, I'd give Duquette an extension.

Not spin, he didn't have that 2 seamer in COL, he has it now and it's a plus pitch. You add a new plus pitch to ANY pitcher and it's totally different.

He had it before in Colorado, it just didn't do anything in Colorado. He threw it 14% of the time last year. It was clearly within the raw materials we traded for.

And it's not just the two-seam FB. It's also improved pitch-values across the board.

This is absolutely spin. You were off-the-charts outspoken about this trade. And, at least so far, you were wrong. (I hope you stay wrong, but that's nothing personal, obviously.)

I was for the trade then and am obviously still for it now. I thought Hammel's numbers were inflated from pitching at Coors, and the evidence was that his FIP was better than Guthrie's. Add to that the fact that Hammel is three years younger and we were getting another power arm in Lindstrom.

I think public opinion of the trade was skewed negatively because people were expecting prospects in return for Guthrie and we didn't get them. If people were looking at it more from a pure value standpoint, i think the poll results would have been more favorable.

He said in some interview recently that he never threw the 2-seamer in COL. It's like Britton level good, it's not like it wouldn't work on the road if it didn't work in COL, so why would he never throw it, or only throw it 14% of the time?

I was off the charts against the trade, but I also thought this was a guy with a couple average pitches and control issues, not a guy with a plus sinker which plays well in OPACY.

Wow...I gave it a D. I must have been in a pretty pessimistic mood.

Yup, you got in on that "no lose position." If you poop on a trade and it doesn't work out, you win! And if it does, you win because you are a fan of the team. All you have to do is eat a little crow and everything is else is gravy.

I've been relatively positive because 1) I didn't think the prospects were being offered, 2) I didn't expect that to change by the deadline and 3) I think it bought us more time with a very similar pitcher in terms of value. That's all still true. If we luck out and Hammell continues to look like Cy Young, great. That gives us options. However, if he resembels what I expected, my original support still stands.

It's like the inverse of Pascal's Wager.
