Thread: Redskins 2012 Draft Predictions

Good teams draft the best player available. Hopefully that player fills a need, but at that stage they felt that there wasn't a single player of Cousins caliber that filled a need, so they went for it. Again, I think it's ludicrous to believe that Cousins will never see the field. If RG3 uses his feet half as much in the NFL as he did in college, he'll take pounding and we'll be glad to have a terrific backup.

True, tho rarely/never in the 4th round of the same draft you draft your franchise QB.
There are plenty of other back up QBs they could sign in FA. Look Shanahan may be a genius, I just think it is reasonable to question this pick.

During all of this, have any of the detractors gone on record to say who they should have selected at that spot?

No one here has said it, but I've read elsewhere that many people thought Bobby Massie should have been the pick. But then when I read a brief scouting report of Massie, it said that he was not suited to a zone blocking scheme so I get why they never took him.
All in all, it's definitely not the normal thing to do and I can see why others are questioning it, but I don't think it was an awful decision either. I can definitely see the logic behind it. Allen/Shanahan had Cousins down as a 2nd rounder and the 3rd best QB overall and felt that he was a guy that they couldn't refuse at that pick. I'm ok with that.

Yeah, Massie had a significant drop. Some of it was due to the perception of an iffy work ethic. Jamaal Brown appears to be finally healthy and they drafted 3 other OL. It's not like they didn't have 3 other picks in rounds 3-5. They grabbed an ILB in the 4th and with their FA signings, he may not be in their top 4 ILB-ers.
Shanahan has a good track record with 4th round picks, so I trust him here.

Why does that matter? Your Redskins FO should have an idea of other players they could have drafted. It was the 4th round. I know I have heard Skins fans in the past not care about anything other than the top couple rounds becuase "its a coin flip" if that player will pan out or not in the later rounds. All I am saying is you could have drafted a player to play on ST and maybe get snaps on the offensive or defensive side of the ball. Is the plan to go with just 2 QBs this year? Or are you going with 3?
I don't hate the pick in itself and where he was drafted. I am just stating it is strange that you drafted your franchise QB with the second pick (also traded away a decent amount of picks to do it) and then you come back around and draft another QB in the 4th. Those are a lot of picks tied up into the QB position. That's all I am saying.

I don't think drafting Cousins was part of the plan (he was just a guy they couldn't refuse there), but now that they drafted him, they are going with 3 QBs: RGIII starting, Rex as backup, and Cousins as 3rd-string/emergency QB. It's not like the Redskins ignored other needs, we made 9 picks total, 3 of whom were OL. We're also getting Jarvis Jenkins (last year's 2nd rounder who looked great in preseason) back from injury so he's like a bonus pick.

Yeah, I've mentioned that it's a debatable pick. No problems with questioning it, but the killing Shanahan's taking for it is absurd. I'm going to assume you are outside of the DC sports talk area. There's no evaluation of the draft as a whole. I mean I guess it's kind of hard for the local media to get a handle on all 9 guys they picked. They surely couldn't handle the 12 from last year. It's just lazy reporting, IMO. To answer your question from an earlier post, it does appear that they'll go with 3 qbs this year. (they went with 2 last year. I think they did get some ST help in the middle rounds. The LB they took will hopefully be a London Fletcher apprentice while playing ST. They got two guards, one of which will hopefully help on the ST line. They had an unbelievable amount block after Golston went on IR. And one DB they got in the 7th was a ST coverage stand out.

You can say it as clearly as you think you need to, it is relevant when talking about a 4th round pick being used on a QB, when you spent the picks and money you did in on your franchise QB of the future.
If they are already concerned about RGIII failing and worrying about insurance policies, then maybe you have to question why they drafted him and spent what they did to get him. They could have very easily gone out and signed a FA QB to be the third option.
Like I said earlier, I don't agree that this pick was moronic, just questionable and odd and may not have been the best use of resources.
