Not sure if Shanahans can do it or not. McNabb was a weird gamble, Beck was a cheap one. The Shanahans have only been in charge of the Skins for a few years and if they like Cousins then I can accept the investment of a fourth rounder for a quality backup.
I think the Shanahans have done a pretty good job so far. IMO, they faced an enormous talent deficit when they took over and three offseasons later they are still recovering from it, but the gap has been closed considerably.

I like the Cousins pick for three reasons:
1) I think it implies that the Shanahans have a few more years to get things "right", which is absolutely the right move.
2) I really like his chances of being a very good backup turned starter in a few years (a la Schaub, Flynn, Kolb or Cassel).
and most importantly:
3) Have you seen RG3 run? It's ludicrous to think he won't spend some time injured. The whole reason for RG3 is so that we wouldn't have to only rely on Grossman at the QB spot.

You don't prepare for the best case scenario. You prepare for the worst. Do you think car insurance is a bad idea? Life insurance? You hope you won't need it, but you probably will (definitely will for life insurance). Shanahan saw value at the QB position and pulled the trigger. Sure, you can question it, but he's building his system. He knows best when it comes to the expenditure of resources.
And if he is wrong enough times, he'll get fired. So whatever...

Cousins is a good insurance policy guy, and I feel they want to be rid of Grossman as soon as possible. So, instead of waiting until next year's draft to get someone in the way low rounds who probably wouldn't be ready to do anything, they got Cousins this year in the fourth, and give him some time in the organization to season. Yes, once again, they spent a lot of draft wealth on Griffin, but if he's worth that much, his confidence won't be so shaky as to not be able to handle this, as it appears to me to be a non-issue. See also the talent gap issue between starter and backup that usually prevails in Washington.

Lots of overreaction on Cousins. Like Don said, it's a great insurance policy, and not a bad move to keep a more developing QB at QB3 for a year or two and see how he does. Either you have your backup for the next 5 years, or you have a trade chip in a couple seasons for something in the 1st-3rd round. A 4th rounder flier for a possible 1-3rd pick later seems like an ok risk. I don't think they had anyone on their board they liked in that range and just took a gamble on a backup QB instead of trading down again. No real news here.

Yeah, hey I get it. My guess is that he was the highest player on their board at that time. And sure insurance policies are fantastic but as much as is being invested in RGIII (both draft picks and what will be money), you would think their focus would be on doing everything possible to making him successful not using their limited resources (even more limited due to what they gave up) on an insurance policy.
Ultimately, you are right. Shanahan's future now relies on RGIII's success. It is all fodder and will sort itself out in the next few years. But I think it is fair to question the pick.

To me, I am not worried about his confidence. I am looking at a squad (Redskins) that have a lot of holes that need to be filled. I can understand if he was BPA at the time, I am just not sure it was the smartest thing to do. Its not like they are set at most positions and backup QB was a glaring need. It really wasn't. That is why people are questioning the move. I feel they have a legit concern with it.
