Single Malt Scotch

I figured I would put this out there and see where everyone's preference is. Being a fine dining waiter/bartender for years, I got the taste of nice single malt scotch. I'm curious to see if there are others here that enjoy trying new ones and am also curious to see what the favorites are. For me, it's hands down The MaCallan 18 year old. What say you and why?? (I'll give my why after a little)

Bruichladdich. 20 year is my favorite, but they're an unbelievable distillery all around.

I do not know where to get it -- pretty rare at this point. Might be able to find an online seller.

The Macallan 12 year is the standard bearer for single malts.

But for character, I love some Laproaig. Never ran across, nor could I afford, the 30 year but the 12 is fine and anything older is splendid.

Oban and Glenmorangie are also nice easy to fined labels.

I will admit I was "stuck" at the InterContinental in Chicago on the Mag Mile for work last year on game 162.
I was in the bar watching the game. It's Michael Jordans place. There was only one TV, believe it or not. I was right underneath it.
I had just gotten there after walking from Ditka's place. The rain delay worked out perfect!
Long story short, I figured I'll indulge in some Mac 18. Because of everything that occured that we all know about...I ended up having 3 drinks.
Um...yeah...$45 a piece(ask for a price you idiot when you order!). Dagger... Honestly, I've never been so happy spending $160 on three drinks, lol. Having a whole bar of Chigago people looking over at why some random guy in an O's golf shirt is screaming at the TV is so worth it. Priceless

Dude...you gotta expect crazy prices for shots of Mac 18. I mean, it RETAILS for about $150 a bottle, then you factor in the 2000% markup that hotel bars use...That said, It's so effing good, and the perfect complement to watching #162 as it went down. I'm envious of your experience, not your bank account.

I've been able to find it at Corridor Wine & Spirits. At $70, it's an absolute bargain.

Single Malt vs Blended.

Blended is cheaper (generally), smoother, balanced. Glenlivet and Johnny Walker are examples. I suggest Famous Grouse as a solid inexpensive starting point. Drink it on the rocks. I don't care for scotch with mixers but some people do. Johnny Walker Green and Gold label are top notch. The Blue is a novelty, excellent, but you are paying for the novelty.

Single Malt means its a whiskey from Scotland from a single distillery and single year (vintage if you will). The labels talked about in this thread are a good starting point. I would go out and buy a 12 year old Macallan to start yourself off. It's really good but not over the top on any particular characteristic. To me, its the standard bearer. And its not that expensive. $50-$60 for a bottle. Do not use mixers! Rocks or neat, maybe a splash of good cold water (just a little). I'll use a few cubes of ice on a warm day, but generally, neat is best.

Note, the Euro being down really keeps scotch prices friendly.

Double note, 12 year old means aged in a wooden barrel for 12 years before bottling. it doesn't age on your shelf

Family tradition is to buy a nice bottle of scotch when a child is born and for the men to have a shot on the important occasions of that child's life. I sprung for a double-malt Lagavullin when the first was born, can't recollect what I bought for the second and then also put out for MaCallan 18 when the third was a boy.

Laphroig, Oban, Bruich Laddich, Ardberg and Bowmore are all good stuff and the more expensive Johnny Walkers (Blue) are growing on me.

My father-in-law is a big scotch guy who passes along a bottle of something every few months. I am a minor leaguer by comparison. There is a big scotch tasting in New York City every year and he goes. One of these years I will as well.
