    NYDN Power Rankings

    6. Baltimore Orioles (14-8, last week No. 13): Wilson Betemit's three-run homer in the ninth made winner of O's on Sunday. Is that some kind of freaky omen?

    7. Atlanta Braves (14-8, last week No. 7): Tim Hudson won Sunday in his return from surgery. Maybe we wrote the Braves off too fast?

    8. New York Yankees (12-9, last week No. 6): Big AL East clash this week with Orioles. What is this, 1996?
For some reason this sentence, from the NY Daily News MLB Power Rankings, made me very happy.

This is the kind or rankings I like to see. Power rankings are supposed to be on how teams have played so far this season, not based off of the past 15 years.

Very shocked to be ranked this high. I would expect a ranking of 12 or lower with a lot of comments about smoke and mirrors.

Exactly. ESPN has us at #12, behind two sub .500 teams. That's a shame.

29.4% chance the O's make the playoffs this year! According to ESPN anyway. Wonder when the last time was we had that number that high.

I think the O's at 6 are too high personally, but still it's nice to have the recognition. I think ESPN has us at 12 going into this week which is pretty cool.

Then why have power rankings at all? The whole concept is just stupid anyway, IMO. If the purpose is to rank the teams based on what they have done so far, the standings are the standings. If the purpose of "power rankings" is to give a subjective view of how the teams are likely to do going forward, I see no reason why the past 15 years aren't relevant. But honestly, I couldn't care less about rankings like these. The only power ranking that matters to me is the actual standings when 162 games have been played.

the idea of power rankings I'd guess are to predict the future based on how "good" the teams are, taking their performance, strength of schedule, and other factors into account (like, injuries or whatever).

We're behind every team in the division according to ESPN.

The Red Sox moved up 14 (!) spots on their list because they went 6-1 against the worst teams in the AL.

Like someone in the comments section said: ESPN might as well just incorporate the Sox logo into their own at this point.

Wow freaky that someone ranks us second. I guess 5 late inning glory wins leaves a memory.

I don't pay attention to ESPN's power rankings; if I pay attention to anything besides the standings its the RPI; which we are currently 6th, right behind Tampa.

I respect NY Daily News' Baseball coverage more than almost any publication (It's about the only thing in that rag that I enjoy).

I'll take their power ranking with some pride, but I'd still rather the O's be lurking, than high on someone's radar.

If we win the series against New York, then we'll have a case. We need to start beating playoff teams. That starts TONIGHT against Kuroda.
