It's either Farrell or Francona. Hale will not be manager.

The following link lists the candidates Gordon Edes thinks the Red Sox will consider.

I think John Farrell, Mike Maddux and Dave Martinez are the top three candidates and apparently Toronto does not want Farrell to go to Boston according to Edes.

I definitely think he's due for an interview somewhere soon, if not necessarily Boston. He interviewed in Toronto when they hired Farrell.

Good 3rd base coaches frequently get discussed for managerial discussions.

Hale has been one of the best 3rd base coaches we've had in a long time (I can only think of..what... 2-3 head scratching sends all year?). I would be devastated if he left next year... especially for the Sox.

Francona is not dumb enough to step back into that cesspool. He will have lots of options this year or next.
If Farrell cannot be had then my money is on Maddux if interested.
My darkhorse candidate is Jason Varitek

Varitek would be risky in that he has no real managing experience but as a catcher and an intelligent one at that he does have some credibility. He is pretty universally accepted as having a very high baseball IQ. Ventura did a more than credible job with zippo experience and Varitek is a incredibly popular guy in that town. IF you cant get the guy you want then maybe you consider it. Worse case scenario it does not work out and you get Farrell when his contract expires.

Francona isn't going back to Boston. Not after the way he was hosed there.

By the way, remember that when Bobby Valentine got to Boston there was a question of whether he would retain Hale as a coach or bring in his own guy. The O's had made it known that they wanted Hale if he was available.

I'd say that worked out pretty well for Hale.

Varitek is in the FO now. If I were him I would have picked a better FO to start my career in.
