One reason I wish Nick Markakis was healthy is...
... You just know he wouldn't be changing his regular season approach one iota. He wouldn't be swinging at lousy pitches, and he wouldn't be over swinging. And maybe that would rub off.
Oh well, maybe I'll get to text that theory in the World Series.

I know there was a thread floating around here somewhere, but has he gotten the pins out? and is there any sort of schedule for him possibly getting back (you know game 7 of ALCS, game 3 of WS, etc...)? TIA

Markakis #1, McLouth #2 would look pretty good right now.

And somewhat ironically, the fat S.O.B. that put Markakis out of commission will be standing in our way today of advancing to the next playoff series.
It's not just that he broke Nick's hand with a pitch .......... it's that he immediately and continuously starting screaming at the umpire that the pitch should have been a strike WHILE Markakis was lying on the ground, writhing in pain.
Sabathia's actions were the complete opposite of Matt Wieters' last night, who may have cost himself a chance at a lead-off double in the 12th inning because his first instinct was to tell Joba Chamberlain to "watch out" when his broken bat went flying towards him after he hit the ball up the left-field line.

As much as I feel exactly the same way you do about CC and I thought we were finished without Markakis, I am assuming you are embelishing about the writhing in pain on the ground. My recollection of the event is he immediately dropped the bat and ran over to the dugout to have the trainer look at it and then went into the clubhouse. Never did he hit the ground. That would be something a Yankee player would do, not our leader!!!

Well I certainly do miss Markakis, and particularly for his plate discipline. But it's not really true to imply that our guys are behaving differently from the regular season in that they're overswinging and swinging at lousy pitches.
Chris Davis has had plenty of games and plenty of at-bats where he ends up looking at 1st base after swinging at a ball in the dirt. Adam Jones has fished after the breaking ball low and away his entire career - maybe less so this year, but still way more than you'd want your top guy to. Matt Weiters also has gone through plenty of games showing off a long loopy swing that misses by a mile.
This is probably the biggest flaw of this team - plate discipline and wanting to hit instead of wanting to not make an out. You can hear it in Adam's quotes, even before yesterday's game. He keeps talking about that's why we have to swing the bats. Yikes.
All of that said, it's 2-2. Our big bats have been cold, and a couple of the guys are in ruts where they're not taking the right approach up there. But it's still 2-2. Flaherty and Machado both have a homer and a double in the past 2 nights. McClouth is out of his mind. We still had runners in scoring position every inning early last night. At the end of every one of these stretches for every one of our hitters during the regular season came a stretch where they were seeing the ball real well, making the pitcher pitch, and hitting the crap out of the ball. We know Chris, Adam, Matt, JJ have it in them. Let's hope a couple of our guys switch it on and make things a little bit easier for our pitchers tonight. But either way, we've proven we can hang and win even with only half a batting order.
Let's go O's.

Someone made a comment a while back that every Yankees player is too busy trying to hit 5-run home runs than actually swinging for contact. Sorry, but this is all I've seen from the Orioles this series. Chris Davis' at bats are terrible. Like legit terrible. Every swing is a 70 degree swing into the sky, trying to jack one. I can feel a little more for everyone else but Davis' approach needs to be corrected immediately. It's so obvious that the Yankees have him figured out that something needs to change.
McLouth is an absolute diamond in the rough. My god. His hitting has been incredible and his defense is golden. I miss Markakis like the desert misses Sting but seriously, of all the people to replace him at the #1 spot, Nate is the man.
Also kudos to Lew Ford for his at bat yesterday. Didn't really do much but outstanding patience.

Both the NYY and the Orioles have scored the majority of their runs this year via the HR. That's how they are built. The problem is that now the stakes are higher and the weather is colder, so pitchers are more careful and balls do not travel as far. I am not sure if they can change their approach that easily.

Well thank heavens Ichiro has cooled off then. He was carrying that team down the stretch and he can play small ball with the best of them. Neutralize him and you pretty much have a station-to-station team out there.

It's true that all these guys have times where they are pressing and (for Jones and Davis) swinging at a lot of bad pitches. But if you think it's a pure coincidence that they are in a spell like that right now, well, I simply disagree, especially with respect to Jones.

Hell, I'd take Betemit back in a heartbeat at this point, though.
