O's receive permission to interview Marlins' Matt Haas (Haas hired)
If hired, he would be our 2nd national crosschecker.

His brother, Danny Haas is the O's current national crosschecker. Kinda neat family connection.

He probably worked for or with Joe Jordan if he had been with the Marlins for any length of time.

More little moves by Duquette to make the Orioles a better organization.

Is he from the Baltimore area? There was a Matt Haas in my grade school...just don't recall him as an athlete. But the age would be about right.

Look, I'm happy with what DD has done so far, and if he prefers Matt Haas to Ron Hopkins, fine. But it's not necessarily the case that this is an improvement. This isn't a situation where we've added a new position, we're merely replacing one guy with another guy. And Hopkins had a pretty impressive resume. He had seven years as the Rangers' scouting director (2003-09) and eight years as national cross-checker for Oakland (1994-2001). The years in which Hopkins was cross-checker for Oakland, they got tremendous value in the draft:
1994 - 11.1 WAR (Grieve 6.7)
1995 - 15.9 WAR (Bellhorn 7.7)
1996 - 40.2 WAR (Chavez 36.0)
1997 - 50.2 WAR (Hudson 50.1)
1998 - 34.4 WAR (Mulder 16.3)
1999 - 39.9 WAR (Zito 31.2)
2000 - 14.8 WAR (Harden 16.1)
2001 - 26.2 WAR (Bonderman 5.4)
(Note, all calculations were from 2011; by now they are a little higher).
Hopkins was an older guy and wanted the scouting director job that Duquette gave to Gary Rajsich. He was let go shortly after the 2012 draft. So, I would say that move was probably more about eliminating possible rivalries in the front office than it was about Hopkins' abilities. Nothing wrong with that, and Matt Haas may be a very good fit here. But the post to which I was responding appeared to just assume that adding a second national cross-checker was automatically some kind of an improvement, and that's not necessarily so.
